Weak Legs and very tired

Carmen-Rider1991 profile image

Hi,

For the past year or so I have been going back and forth to the doctors without much success of a diagnoses.

The reason I first attend the surgery was that I was extremely tired and drained all of the time.

They took bloods and noticed I had a low foliate levels and immediately put me on Folic acid for a few months. I went back to the surgery still not feeling any better and the took more blood and found out I had low Vitamin D levels. They put me on a cores of Vit D and suggested I amended my diet. I stuck to a healthy diet and try to drink 2- 3 liters of water a day (which i was already doing). They did mention at some point during my visits that they may send me to a specialist to see if i had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

I went back to the GP after finishing the Vit D tablets still not feeling any better and noticed my legs were becoming even weak and heavy, constantly finding new bruises on my legs daily, feeling very tired and have pains running from my hips to my calf's.

They sent me for more blood tests to see if my blood could show why all my bruises were appearing and nothing has shown up and all my vitamin levels have gone back to normal.

I am now being referred for a MRI lumber scan and to the neurology department.

Has anyone else had any of this and no what it might be??

I am very concerned as i am only in my twenties and it effecting nearly every party of my life.

My father did pass away from MS and my mother has a neurological disease. From what I understand it is not hereditary however, i cant help but worry.

It is taken such a long time to find out what is going on and each day I am feeling worse.

Hopefully someone on here may have an idea on what may be going on or have similar experiences and have a suggestion on how to move things forward.

Hi Carmen, I totally understand your concerns. For sure you are being pointed in the right direction at last and the neurologist won't waste any time in giving you answers. There is no point in speculating at this stage as there are endless possibilities regarding your condition. I hope all goes well for you, please keep me posed.

How much VitD did your GP prescribe ? - and do you know the result of your blood test. Always good to ask for copies of ALL test results so you can monitor your progress - they are legally yours. If your Folate was low then I am thinking your B12 was also LOW - as they work together in the body. It is a mistake to supplement Folic Acid as this can mask B12 deficiency. Were you tested for B12 ? Results need to be over 500 to prevent neurological symptoms.

Low B12 and VitD are often missed and other more serious conditions are diagnosed. Docs do not receive the training for vitamins etc. at Medical School.

Have you had your Thyroid correctly tested ? - TSH - FT4 - FT3 and Thyroid Anti-bodies - TPO and Tg ?? There are over 300 symptoms of Low thyroid - and low vitamins and minerals is just one of many.

PLEASE scroll down in the above link to read about the neurological signs and symptoms of LOW B12. There is a video under the heading FILMS on the Menu on the left - where you can see a Doctor in the states who was on the way out with B12 Deficiency.

Do click onto my name above and read my Profile that will only take seconds ! - you can see why I have such a passion and where I have been blessed to gain so much knowledge from others that know more than me. Happy to help :-)

CFS - is as the name suggests - a syndrome - so rule out other things first. Once that label is on your notes everything else will be ignored :-)

Thank you Marz, I will speak to my surgery and obtain the results. They did tell me they were testing all of my D & B vits.

I can't remember the exactly mg of how much i was taking (apologizes i have a poor memory). I had to take two tablets once a week but I think it was over 1000 per tablet (i think).

They always test my thyroid as my mum has a overactive thyroid which was left un-diagnosed for years however, the bloods have all come back good this time. My thyroid has been tested on and off for years even before my mums was confirmed through blood test and nothing has every come back. My Mum did have to have B12 injections when she was pregnant with me ironically.

100% agree with you with regard to the CFS. If the MRI (hopefully) dose not show up anything neurological I will push my GP to send me to a specialist for vitiams or B12 as i don't think they will listen until they have the results back from that now.

I will read both the link you have sent and your profile. Thank you once again for you advice.

:)

I have been on the Thyroid Forum here on HU for 6 years and read daily that GP'S say everything is fine. This is why you need copies of all test results so you can check and re-check. It also helps when posting as there are 100's like me who can spot what has been missed by the GP.

They often say fine or normal when they mean * in range *. It is where you are in range that is so key. I was told my B12 eas fine - it was NOT and I live with the consrquences ....

Thyroid testing on the NHS is abyssmal and reveals very little. I was not diagnosed until I moved to Crete in 2004 at 59 after a lifetime of complex illness.

Hi are you on any medication at all. Cant believe no one has asked. Tired heavy legs could be statin induced myopathy, or PMR. Bruising easily should get a FBC. With your family history MRI and LP may be worthwhile to put your mind at rest but LP not much fun!

Are you on statins or betablockers?

No I am not. At the start of year i was on the vits D and Folate but as they are both okay now i haven't taken them for a few months. I have just been put on (this week) Amitiptyline not for its effect with depression as i don't suffer from that. Apparently if used in small doses it will relive nerve pain for my legs and headaches. The neurology appointment has come in very quick under a two week wait so will hopefully have some more answers after that appointment next week. Doubt it but must remain positive.
