Hello,

I'm UK based, I see your in the US so this may or may not help you as much.

I've had dystonia on and off for almost a year now, with my hands and wrist being affected as you described. What I had found works the best for me was buying a wrist brace with a metal support as part of the brace in which during the time I have the dystonia I would put the brace on in an effort to straighten out my wrist and hand. They can be purchased either through Amazon or a drugstore. For me I didn't have physio for this issue as using the brace was enough to sort out my wrist and by the next day I would usually have a functioning had again.

Sorry if this doesn't help much.

This helps a lot. We are seeing an OT today in hopes to get a similar brace/splint. Not sure if its indeed Distonia - we see the Neurologist on Friday. However, given that she has unexplained foot drop from a couple years ago and diagnosed with possible FND and then this odd fist clenching occuring after another "trauma" we are wondering if related to something going on in the brain. Were you able to open your wrist on your own or eventually? Currently, we have to manually bend her wrist and force her fist open. Any other details you can provide on your situation would be helpful and I am very worried for my daughter. Thanks in advance.

In some cases my hand would open after my wrist had been straightened and was held in position by the brace and sometimes it would stay locked even with the brace on. I had found my dystonia triggers to be the cold and also where I'm autistic, sensory overload being a huge trigger for me as well.

My FND issues are mostly motor tics, I have found that sometimes I could have a tic and then my hand/wrist would be locked.
