BLUE SKY NEWS - AUGUST 2022

While some of the content of the August edition of the Blue Sky New’s publication from Prostate Cancer Foundation Australia (PCFA) is mainly relevant to readers from Oz, there are a number of general items that might be of interest to other readers.  Information and links to this edition and previous 2022 publications are also provided.

Mental Help Matters

This item acknowledges the launch of a project to create Australia’s first Prostate Cancer Survivorship Toolkit.   PCFA’s Chief of Mission and Head of Research, Professor Jeff Dunn AO, says the toolkit will give men the knowledge and strength they need to navigate prostate cancer “Importantly we want the web-based toolkit to provide men with a virtual clubhouse for connecting with other survivors and supporters”

Epigenetics and Prostate Cancer: can the dance of your DNA Determine Cancer Survival

This article focuses on the research to be undertaken by Dr Pierre-Antonine Dugue exploring the connection between epigenetics and prostate cancer survival, progression and outcomes.  He describes his main objective as to “identify patients who are high risk or low risk of their cancer spreading, so we can make better decision about treating the disease and minimising invasive procedures or starting early with more powerful medicines.”

In the Name of the Father

While the statistics in this item apply to Australia, the message is universal.  It raises awareness to the need for vigilance by those young men who have a family history of prostate cancer.  I found this item a good reminder and an issue of personal relevance for the men and boys in my family.  For our son, both his late grandfather and father have been affected and for four of our grandsons both grandfathers (maternal and paternal) and a great grandfather have been affected.

Love, Live, Surf and Survivorship

Tim Baker, the world’s number one surf culture anthropologist and award-winning journalist, storyteller and author of nine books has recently released his first autobiography documenting his experience with prostate cancer.  Aptly named Patting the Shark is described in this article as “impossible to put down, telling of Tim’s efforts to navigate his way through the maze of treatment, meditation, diet, exercise, emotional support and counselling.   The book’s blurb states “This is a story about facing your mortality, staring down your fears, and working out what really matters in life, when so many elements of your identity are stripped away.  It offers hope comfort and empathy for anyone facing a cancer diagnosis and their loved ones.”  The book is published by Penguin.

Thanks Marnie,

I was not aware of Blue Sky News... This covers all aspects of living with PCa... new developments, help on chronic issues... It's enough to get me singing ,,"Waltzing Matilda", but maybe I better leave that for a K9 Vocalist... He sings like Frank Sinatra, but dances like Fred Astaire...

Well Dave I'm glad you think it's OK...I was a bit worried that for many on this hub, at least, it might be a bit basic.

I found your post interesting and of value.I joined the advanced PC category of HU/Malecare about 2 years ago.

Posts from "fight prostate cancer" show up in my posts. I don't know if I "clicked" caused that but definitely no complaints.

On top of that the back and forth between cujoe, npfisherman, yourself, et all is informative and at the same time warm.

Thanks.

npfisherman or cujoe will be able to explain to you why the posts show up in your stream of posts. I'm not sure and don't understand the 'mechanics' of it but it's something to do with FPC 'sitting on' a different 'hub'. so if I click on ' My hub' at the top.... the various ones I visit come up like APC and FPC but I think you need to have actioned something for this to happen...which you probably have done.

I'm really glad you found the post interesting. I like this publication as it's sort of straight forward and has a 'friendly' simple feel to it. Just general content though nothing earth shattering!

Nice feedback that you find this hub informative and it will give acknowledgement and encouragement to those men who post new developments in the area of research, and explanations of the various aspects of this condition as well as providing balanced and well informed advice to those who post on FPC - especially cujoe and npfisherman (Dave to me) and others too. I always find that they are a source of exceptionally well informed, sound, wise, practical advice as well as being positive and supportive. MateoBeach, similarly who has recently added his unique contributions.

Regards, Marnie.

Thank you.

You're very kind and thoughtful.

Yes I assume somewhere in my fog ridden memory I would find that I had purposefully added FPC lol.

Yes it seems you here are a group or crew (npfisherman pun intended) that has known each other somewhat personally for awhile. Nice.

To be honest I can't remember how I added it either. Expect one of my 'mates' told me how to do it. Yes some of us have communicated over quite a while now...been through the bumps along the way. If you stick around you'll find, like I have, that it's a very positive, supportive, respectful group.

It has had a lot of coverage here Paul and very good reviews.

When I was reading the information in the link below, it brought back very pleasant memories of our day at Manly and watching the surfing competition. Hope all goes well for you.

M - Your linked excerpt from the book is a riveting description of a dangerous encounter with a shark and a first encounter with the internal danger we come to know as PCa. Another book to add to my long reading list, but one that I'm sure will resonate with all those reading here.

Thanks, as always, for your thoughtful insights. Keep it Safe & Well in the Land of Great World-Class Surfers. Ciao - K9

PS - I just edited this reply to add a super review of the book that adds more depth to the journey of the author, Tim Baker, in embracing his cancer diagnosis and life thereafter. Good Stuff for all of us on our separately shared journeys with life & PCa.
