I asked Housing benefit to clarify the situation and I was told that it doesn't apply to private renters or home owners, only Housing associations Tenants

Bedroom tax
Hi Amanda could you just clarify are you classing council housing under the umbrella of housing association tenants as I was under the impression it was council and housing association tenants, who would be affected so you are the best person to ask as you have spoken to housing benefit
Thanks

So I believe!
It would be much more constructive if they gave a small incentive to people renting spare rooms, not penalising those who don't!

I think the whole thing is bongers,it dosnt effect me but it still makes me cross,my spare room is an office, how does that work, there's no bed in there so it dosnt make it a bedroom its an office, surely they couldn't class that as a bedroom?

Hi,yes to clarify,I was classing council housing under the umbrella of housing association tenants so it's council and housing association tenants, who would be affected
Thanks Amanda

I think it is if they are paying the rent they will only pay for one bedroom if one occupant or couple. I don't think it will affect people who pay there own rent but not sure,
I do think it is ridiculus

Have a little tip about this , as i have probs geting down stairs when my son left home i changed his room into an upstairs living room an apparently as im not well . A lot of you on hear are wears ! Then its classes as 2 bed as i need a living area mmm how about that then ? I own my own house but my friend doesent an isent well eather an has beain advised this may b what she needs ;0) hope it helps xx
If she is a council or housing association tenant it's how they determine how many bedrooms there are in the house regardless of how the tenant uses them. However there is a minimum bedroom size used for houses of multiple occupancy (which is quite small but can't remember off hand how small) that is being talked about elsewhere of being used to legally challenge the council/HA definition of a bedroom.
Some HAs are saying they will reclassify houses so that tenants won't need to pay anything extra. My local council have said that they will keep their current housing allocation policy but will advise tenants of the implications (whatever that's supposed to mean).
I know that but if you don't likes lot of my friends an family , if your not aboul boded or Struggle with the stairs you can do this an class it as need or separate rooms fir you an your spouse if need be because of illness . This ranges from sleep apnea to all sorts of things worth looking into xx
In my borough, those that pay full council rent , it is rising between £7 - £9 per week .. So they get you all ways
I am in private rented accomodation and had to move to a 1 bed property as that is all i am entitled to this is not a council property I don't even get the correct amount of rent to cover the flat. In Bournemouth it states they will only pay what bedroom entitlement you are entitled to so as one person i am only allowed to claim for 1 bedroom.
Its obvious to me that the bedroom tax is confusing a lot of people. Ive heard so many different things about it, concerning Council/ HA tenants, also privately rented, privately owned but on HB, who's exempt and who's not etc etc. Its not been interpreted very well, so if the Councils and Housing Benefit get it wrong, how are we supposed to know what's happening? Time is ticking on and so many people still dont know what's going to happen. Another government scheme that's not working......
