Hello, i am a 42 yr old man diagnosed with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome last summer. My rheumatologist has referred me to a clinical psychologist who i saw yesterday. He is going to put me on an individual programme. Has anyone here had experience of this and is it a good thing? I wasn't sure that the psychologist fully understood my condition.

Hello, i am a 42 yr old man diagnosed with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome last summer.
Hi Healey
your lucky that they have refered you, I was diagnosed 18mth ago and refered back to the dr....... thats all for now folks was the attitude from the hospital....pain killers and thats it.... more needs to be done to understand about it and what can be done to help people wyo suffer from both.... gentle huggs Nutty x
Clinical psychology is the branch of psychology concerned with the assessment and treatment of mental illness, abnormal behavior and psychiatric problems. what has that to do with physical pain? or am i missing the point here... are they trying to make you believe you dont have pain?
I was diagnosed by the rhumatologist and just sent back to the doc's who did not want to give me any pain killers just anti-depressants. He eventually gave in on the pain killers but only as far as solpadol...smarties are stronger..lol. as for the anti-depressants..all i want to do all day now is sleep.
Ologyannie, Solpadol is the same as Co-Codamol. The ratio of codeine is 30/500 (500 being Paracetamol) so the dose is quite high and usually very effective for Fibromyalgia pain. If this isn't helping to manage your pain, please have a word with your GP who hopefully can prescribe you something along side to help you.
I take Solpadol for my pain but also take a muscle relaxant and the combination works a treat for me. This is the point I am trying to make. Sometimes it's getting the right combination of medications in order for us to manage all our symptoms.
If your antidepressants are knocking you out to that effect then the chances are that either the dose is too high or they don't suit you. If you speak to your GP about this, this can be adjusted too for you.
Please let us know how you get on. Take care.

If you don't get any joy with your GP, then see another GP at your surgery, you are entitled to another opinion. Hope this helps. xxxx
Hi, ologyannie...you seriously need to change your doc urgently! If you took your dog to the vet who was clearly in agony and he prescribed smarties, you could have him struck off for neglect! Funny that, we wouldnt stand of all this ignorance and rudeness for our beloved pets yet we seem to accept it for ourselves!
My old gp was a dinosaur and he did first say i had fibro to be fair but only prescribed me 2 tramadol a day and i was sobbing in agony. Eventually i plucked up the courage to change to one who had been recommended and i wish id done it years ago. If you read through my old blogs you will see just how good some docs are, dont put yourself through this daily
misery a minute longer please!
Hi Healey7 and welcome to our lovely site.I too am puzzled as to why you have been sent down this route. Perhaps if possible you could ask why? Is the doc saying you have problems there?
My ffs specialist reffered me to a psycholgist who also put me on a programme, it is for coping skills and it does help. The programme covers things like assessing pain and fatigue levels, identifying things you can and can't do and accepting these things, finding you limits, pacing etc. My specialist did stress I wasn't being referee for mental broth reason but to help me cope and manage the illness
