I have been taking 10mg a day for three weeks it worked on me within days making me tired, came off it two days ago... Apart from no pain relief whatsoever it made me so tired I couldnt wake up in the morning and yawned all through the day felt like a zombie, I do take other meds though only 2 and low doses but they made me sleep anyway so I think this was just too much for my body to handle....

I was started on 10 mg two days ago, so far no difference but I was told to give it a week and if still no good increase by 10 mg.

Hi Everyone,

I personally found Amitriptyline not to be very effective in my case. I think as with all medications it seems what works for one is not always as effective for others. The Consultant at the Pain Clinic decided that instead of Amitriptyline , a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) he would commence Duloxetine which is a Serotonin–Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor (SNRI). I have found this to be effective and take it regularly at night.

If you feel after a reasonable period of time that it does not seem effective. I would consider making an appointment with your GP for his/her suggestions in relation to possibly trying other medication/s that may be more effective.

All the best

Emma

I was started on 25mg, then my prescription was changed to 50mg, then 75mg, then 100mgs. It worked very well for me with no side effects at all other than weight gain, but that was due to my inactivity too I am sure.

I took Amitriptyline for almost 4 years and my symptoms were changing through this period. I stopped taking them altogether almost two months ago and feel much better for it. I really needed them at the beginning when I was first diagnosed, but these days I need pain relief more than anything, so I stopped taking my other meds. I only take pain relief for my Fibro, CFS/ME and RLS now.

Amitriptyline takes time to reach full effect, I personally would suggest stick with it, give it a fair time to experience it working to full effect. It has been very effective for many people with Fibromyalgia. :)

If you don't feel it is suitable for you after giving it time, then speak to your GP who would consider other med options for you.

Hi, I started on 10mg a number of years ago to help me sleep as I'm an insomniac. It helped a little. Twelve months ago I was allowed to increase it to 100mg but by 10mg increments because my pain was so bad and not sleeping made the pain worse. I'm now on 60mg and it works great. I have tried to go higher, but my body reacts by giving me panic attacks and poor mental health so I've stuck with 60mg, which most of the time does the trick. Personally I wouldn't be without it as I would return into a spiral of no sleep, more pain, etc. I find it great, but everyone's body is different and we're all on a different cocktail of drugs. Good luck x
