Fibro-Pain-Flare-Mattress-Dreams Sleep Match-Emma-Warning-Have I Made A Mistake-Aaarrgghh

About 10 years ago I had to give up my much loved Canadian King Waterbed due to Fibro and the back pain. The low wooden frame one's from the 70's.

This was when I first looked at FMUK on mattresses .

I have bought quite few different mattresses & toppers since then.

My last 4 inch topper from Amazon being the best one yet.

Few months ago I decided it might be a good idea to buy an adjustable bed & new really good mattress so I didn't need a topper.

I had been having some better pain days at this point.

I went to Dreams to go on their sleep match machine that tells you what mattress would be best for you.

BAD idea. This was what put me in to my last flare that lasted 3 weeks.

If I knew before hand what the machine did I would not have tried it.

They type in your details, pain & areas then yo lie on it on your back, then because I'm a side sleeper on to my side.

When on your back the machine scans your body then a massive hard pretruding lumpy thing pushes out and presses on you down your whole spine.

OMG my body flinched up away from the pain, my spine cracked I was instantly buckled up in pain in spine, legs, groin I could barely walk and stand. I had to get straight home then was in bed for 3 weeks in bad flare.

The sleep motion bed was for a double was £699 and the headboard was £199.

The sleep motion bed suggested the best mattress for me was either a Tempur mattress at just under £1500, or another mattress at just under £1600.

I was scared to spend so much money on a mattress in case it didn't work for me so went home to think about it.

Then on 18th August a 4 month old king size sleep motion bed came up on marketplace with a Hyde & sleep mattress for £1000, The king size was £799 in dreams. I though yes I would be saving well over a grand, I bought it, cost £100 for man & van to collect and deliver to me on the 19th.

I did lie on the bed before I bought it but lying on it for 5 mins is not the same as sleeping on it.

I'm in so much pain in my my back/spine, hips, neck and shoulders sleeping on it every night since then.

Its too firm which has meant I have had to order a topper (which I didn't want to do)

Anyway I ordered a Emma flip topper on sale for £178.99, its been a whole week since ordering it and I've had no dispatch email, said delivery in 3-5 days and they will let me know when its been dispatched. I chatted to them before placing the order told them I had chronic pain disability and would this topper be ok as it is half thickness as my old topper (which was too thick on top of this new very thick mattress my bed was too high.

They still tried to persuade me to buy their thicker topper even though I told them it would make my bed too high.

I have now got rid of my old bed/topper as my bungalow is small so needed the room.

I don't know what to do, if I should cancel my order from Emma.

Looking at truspilot now and I wish I looke there before ordering it. I could be waiting months for it to arrive or months to get a refund.

So now I'm thinking have I done the wrong thing in buying the bed 2nd hand.

Athough I'm loving the extra room with the king size. And I'm loving the bed just not the mattress.

But also a warning to anyone thinking of trying the dreams sleep match.

Sorry, I just needed to rant :'(

I'm so sorry for writing a book,. 🥴

oh my gosh, I so feel for you. A mattress is so very important for our bodies. Well, I would say wait for the topper and if need be, because all is just to miserable, you will just have to chalk it up and remind yourself that you didn’t pay full price, thank goodness.

You did also spark my interest with the previous 4 inch topper you bought from Amazon. Would you share what brand that was? I’m looking for a new topper. I am I. The US but hopefully our Amazon sells the same one you spoke of. I’ve got fibro too and multiple other conditions and sleeping is a battle. Thank you in advance for sharing.

Hi   anna4969

It was

Vesgantti 4 Inch Memory Foam Mattress Topper

Lots of reviews from people with chronic pain :)

Was so cosy and soft, I wish I could buy it again but in king size but my bed was just too high with the mattress being much deeper than my previous mattress. It was like climbing mount Everest 😂

I ordered a stainless steel inner pot for my ninja foodi from Amazon.com because it worked out cheaper even with postage from US to UK than if I bought it from Amazon.uk

So maybe you can order from UK if they haven't got it , Im not sure though.

thank you thank you. I’m going to look for it right now. And yes, I agree on the shipping charges, though I’ve noticed before that some items won’t ship to Is. Keeping fingers. Tossed😔. Best of good luck to you that all will work out.

Oh saxcat I'm so sorry you are in such pain. Buying a bed or mattress can really be a hit or miss experience. I recently bought a new mattress from Dreams which cost around £1700, was I surprised at the cost! Luckily it's wonderful, I had had my previous one for 16 years and that was heaven, but it really needed to go. I used their bed machine thing and luckily it didn't hurt me, but can understand that it would cause a lot of pain for anyone with spinal problems, they really need to put up warning signs.

I hope your new topper arrives soon. Sending gentle hugs your way. x

Welshcatlady Its so much money , i'm grumping about the ones they recommended for me and they were slightly cheaper lol.

Thank you, still no sign of it, still no dispatched notifications.

Might just cancel get refund and get another one from Amazon. Cheaper than the Emma one too. lol

Yes I'd cancel it, and if you don't get your refund in a reasonable time, I'd get in touch with your bank. x

saxcat in reply toWelshcatlady

Hi Welshcatlady Thanks :)

I didn't know you could ask your bank to help.

I have contacted citizens advice.

I have shouted at Emma sleep to give me my money back on their facebook group. lol

And I left them a terrible review on Trustpilot.

Today I have recieved an email from Trustpilot saying Emma wants more info from me.

They replied to my feedback saying sorry for the delay.

I am just waiting to hear back from them now.

So hopefully they will refund me because I have asked for that.

I don't want their topper anymorenow.

Even though I thought it might be a good one for fibro because it was a flip topper, I thought depending on pain levels I could flip it to either softer or firmer side. X

I'm contacting my bank today because they still haven't contacted me and I'm still getting the same response on their website from their chatbot only. x

Sorry that you haven't had your refund yet. The bank may require you to wait a little longer, but anyway you can report them to the bank. 🤗

Ah, a fellow Princess. I feel your pain. (and mine and..) And for how you need a ladder to get to bed each night.

I was hoping you'd tell about one of the Tempur soft mattresses. I too saw the Hyde and Sleep was classed as soft but wasn't sold. Wasn't sold on anything in the end on account of the prices and my concern that after spending too much, I'd still be a princess. Darn those Peas are something, irritating!

I have a selection of toppers. The last addition was the Dormeo Octaspring Deluxe and, it hasn't quite been the charm. Better maybe, once I reshuffled the toppers but it's still not soft enough. I got rid of a springy mattress that was getting old but was still reasonably comfortable, if I ignored how I was sleeping, deeper and deeper, in a divot? Maybe not great for the back? The next mattress, with springs, is not springy and thus there is no movement and I think that is required? Hence my worry over the Tempur.

I don't know how to help except to say, it's really tricky finding the right one. So when you do, we need to hear all about it. OK?

saxcat profile image
saxcat in reply toAl10

Al10 sorry It was the medium Tempur mattress the machine recommended for me but I didn't buy it.

Reading online they say for fibro and chronic pain memory foam is good, because it forms to your body. and they say for chronic pain side sleepers that a 4inch topper is better.

My 4 inch topper was comfy.

Just found the tag on the Hyde & Sleep and it says medium firm, which is probably why it hurts me,

I stupidly didn't ask the lady I bought the bed from about firmness when I bought it, I just lay on it and thought it would be ok.

I was so excited about saving around a grand- grand & a half .

They always see me coming 😂

Al10 profile image
Al10 in reply tosaxcat

Eesh! I think swerving the medium Tempur was a good swerve. A lot of money for something likely not soft enough.

They always see us coming!

Frankly, searching for the perfect mattress feels like searching for the Holy Grail. Does it even exist?

Some people now spend thousands on a good bed. More than I spent on my first house!! Wonder if that's the charm?

The oldest memory topper I have, is still the best. It's clear to me the formulation changed and later ones haven't been so good. Even the expensive ones have been a disappointment. One I bought was unbelievably hard. It was so unbelievable I believed the blurb about it needing to settle and warm up and😣 ... It was still hard. 😢And there were no backsies once it's been slept on!😧🤣

I wonder if we need to go to a sleep hotel where you can try the various mattresses? Are there places like that?

saxcat profile image
saxcat in reply toAl10

Hi Al10 The medium would be perfect for me, I think the soft might be too soft.

When I went on the medium Tempur it did sink quite a bit more than I expected it to.

The Hyde & seek that came with my bed is a medium/firm which is probably why it hurts me, it feels like I'm lying on hard boards lol.

When in Dreams they did say when lying on the mattresses to take as long as I needed to.

I had an Inofia topper before I had the Vesganti topper, the Inofia was a firmer denser foam, the Vesganti said it was a dense foam but when it arrived it was extremely soft and spongy compared to the Inofia and I thought no way this is a dense foam.

But It ened up being more comfortable than the Inofia one. If I get my money back from Emma I think I am just going to buy another Vesganti one and put up with the high bed I think because I know that topper was comfy :)

What's the difference between a memory foam mattress by Emma etc. and one by Tempur, apart from Tempur being the market leader? If the blurb says the memory foam is the result of the NASA research, surely there can't be any difference.

saxcat profile image
saxcat in reply toMaggieSylvie

Hi MaggieSylvie

Sorry I never answered you yesterday I was in so much stress with EmmaSleep.

I'm not sure of what the difference is with Emma to others.

But when I was in Dreams the lady said that Tempur ones was a different foam to a normal memory foam, she said it wasn't memory foam, but I've forgot what type of foam she said it was 🤣😐

I may have to go back and ask her lol

MaggieSylvie profile image
MaggieSylvie in reply tosaxcat

Well, saxcat, they call it "memory foam" at Tempur, don't they? If it's different, how much difference does it make to someone with back problems? I think you've got to go into the shop and lie on the mattress for long enough to allow your bones to adjust the way they would when getting into your own bed at night. Then to get 90 days trial. That 90 day trial is so important.

Buying second hand means you can't send it back if it "doesn't work", you don't have any consumer protection. It would be great for someone who doesn't have any back problems; they would, no doubt, get lovely comfy nights' sleep, but when you have back problems, you have to almost have a bespoke mattress, because what suits one back sufferer may not suit another. Your new second-hand bed may suit you down to the ground, and I hope it does. Of course, you might be better of spending your money on myofascial release because it could be that there isn't a bed on this planet that will relieve you of your pain.

MaggieSylvie profile image
MaggieSylvie in reply tosaxcat

Beware of sales patter! Sales people want sales. It's nothing to them whether the bed relieves your pain or not. By all means, do some of your research in Dreams or other stores, try out Tempur, but don't rely on someone who isn't a sufferer to persuade you to buy their product. Even if you get a 60 or 90 day trial, it's a hassle to send the thing back if you don't like it.

About five years ago, I did my research and went for a hybrid mattress. I thought it would have suited my partner. It was awful (might suit someone); I gave it time, because I think sometimes you have to get used to a mattress, but I didn't send it back. I got a little topper, and the mattress is now tolerable. I've got FM and also several compression fractures, but the most cofortable mattress I ever had was a memory foam one with a coolmax cover. I mention the cover because many people complain that memory foam gets hot. When we first moved here we slept on the floor on a measured out piece of foam, and that was good. I think it's important to stay away from springs of any kind.

Sorry if I am confusing anyone.

I need a medium mattress,.

I like memory foam.

A warning to anyone that's thinking about buying anything from Emma ""DON'T""

My heads in a bin.

Looks like I have been ripped off.

As well as many other people seemed to have been too.

I wish I read Truspilot & their facebook page before I ordered from Emma.

I have tied to contact them to cancel my order for a refund so I can buy a topper now.

They will not talk to me.

When you phone them too you get an automated message saying their phone is down.

I have contacted citizens advice to see if anything can be done.

😭🤬

You should have consumer rights, but they are only as good as our ability to enforce the rules. Have you tried your bank? Credit card people? Say the trouble you have had? I've heard they can be helpful.

Hi all comfy mattress seekers :)

In the last sixteen years I too have been searching for a mattress that would let me have a good nights sleep.

I have fibromyalgia pain in all sorts of varying places, mostly in my lower back and spine, radiating down my right hip and leg. Shoulder with torn ligaments and as I’m a side sleeper that hurts a lot too.

ME/CFS means I also have lots of days with total exhaustion as well, so my bed is very important in my life.

There have been memory foam, springs of various types, firmer, softer, deeper (“stepladder needed” high), thinner, with all sorts of toppers and combinations of these…… nope, nothing was just right.

But four months ago I found it!!

Honestly, I now have more good nights sleep than before on a reasonably low cost mattress with no topper. Under £500 !!

It is a ‘ SILENTNIGHT - JUST BREATHE’ mattress. It’s marketed as a “Very Cold” mattress that means you don’t wake in a hot sweaty huddle as I did with various other types as it has much better air flow.

I also changed the bed base from a wooden slatted frame to a sprung double divan and I imagine that has helped too.

I know what an individual thing mattresses are. Impossible to recommend anything as it may not suit the next person to try it….but….if anyone can profit from my search and find it does suit them… fantastic!

Please let us all know….

Gentle hugs to all….. and to “SAXCAT” I’m really sympathetic to your search and hope you soon get good results.

😘😴😴

Al10 profile image

Ooh, I thought about a sprung base.

Very cold would put me off. But I shall have to look into it now. Thanks for the tip.

Luckychica profile image
Luckychica in reply toAl10

The ‘very cold’ thing almost put me off too….but as I have been much too hot sleeping on memory foam mattresses I actually decided it wouldn’t be freezing so I’d give it a go.

All it means is that it’s comfy and cool to get into.

If you D/M me I can send you the details of where I bought the double sprung divan online.

Good luck.

Thanks. Only, I don't know how to DM and can't see any help to find out. 🤔

Current bed buying plans are mainly pipe ones, in my dreams, sadly. 🙄

House has gotten tired of being neglected and insisted he needed a few essential jobs doing before winter. It's been a bit ouch but hopefully that's it, for a while?

Now I'm kinda waiting for my next Ship 🚢to come in, but it doesn't hurt to be ready to spend all the spoils when it does hey?
