Hi all. Could somebody please tell me if they get this feeling/sensation?

I feel as if when I'm eating, my food is only going as far as my upper chest. Sometimes it feels like I can't swallow anything and I constantly feel full.

Is this another trate of fibro?? Thanks all x

Hi, I sometimes get a similar sensation caused by acid reflux. However, I would suggest speaking to your gp and getting it checked.

Thanks Hazel I will ask my GP.

Hi, there! This strange feeling of the food reaching only your upper chest, may be the sign of hiatus hernia, meaning the stomach being relocated partly in the chest cavity. When eating, the part of the stomach that is above diaphragm, gets quickly filled with food, so you feel full quickly and for long. It would be worth testing it at the hospital... P.

Thankyou steelheart, I will mention it to my GP. Just wondering if it's an unusual thing or is it common??

Hi Purple,

All the time I can eat the tiniest amount and feel full, never finish anything food wise. I do have a 4 cm hiatus hernia and take meds for this but this sensation is always there, I also get the feeling that my throat is closing and I cant swallow.

Hi! This feeling of dysfunctional swallowing is something I experience from time to time, but not often. Have been reading this forum for long and many people have mentioned the same problem. It is well known fact that in Winter, when there are a lot of holidays and good food, some of the elderly people get choked with food, for that same reason - dysfunctional swallowing. The throat region is also affected in the other way - some people temporarily loose their voice. It is obvious that, from time to time, the innervation of throat region gets problematic... Regards!

Thanks panda. Yes my throat seems as if its closing over and also swallowing is difficult at times. I'll mention the hiatus hernia to my GP. X

Hi Same here only been diagnosed since December but had exactly the same feeling for about 2 weeks . It also makes me burp all the time as well but I feel like I have a lump between my chest and my back.

Hi ski2020, I don't have the feeling of a lump between chest and back. Just a lump or closure feeling at upper chest. X

I seem to be getting this a lot of late. I’m going to have to get it checked by GP

When I had exactly this a long time ago, a gastroscopy showed an inflammation of the stomach, but no ulcer as was suspected. Probably IBSD. An elimination diet helped. Now I sometimes have an esophagus total block. I have spoken to another fibromite who had exactly the same thing too. That's more extreme, I then can't swallow for up to 30mins., extremely painful, so if I feel it's going to take more than 5 mins, I don't tolerate it any more, I get it out again, and can then strangely carry on eating again. My gut diary shows there are 3-4 foods which primarily seem to cause it (carrots, tofu, apple juice/sauce...), but as it only happens 2x or less a month it can't be just what food it is (or how cold it is) and is hard to diagnose by the ENTs. It's independent of my heartburn, reflux, stomach burning/hyperacidity. The symptoms don't fit to eosinophilic oesophagitis. My ideas up to now are reduced contractility or my sicca syndrome (dryness almost everywhere), both associated with Sjögren's, which I may have a preform of. Studies are old, 1970s-1990s, can't find anything newer. They seem to suggest dysmotility, not the reduced saliva, but it's all still controversial.
