It does state alcohol n duloxetine don't mix av just picked my prescription up to start them but a bit weiry about these I'm starting a 30 mg dose quite low but worried about side effects, how do others find these helpful about frequent elimination needs through the night.

Hi I've always been told that drinking alcohol with anti depressants by GP cancels them out .

I'm not going to add anything else because it would be inappropriate .

Hope your ok .Best wishes.

Drinking with some medications can be dangerous. Maybe it could be something you could discuss with your GP or a pharmacist are a pretty good source of information to give you some guidance.

Is it possible my drinking was because of/cause of my depression? I have a good life and felt the depression was something chemical and not mental. Once the antidepressants were working I did not even feel the need to drink hence felt better as a result. Why would people need to justify drinking alcohol if they felt better sober. Love to all, x.

i am taking the same as you 90mg, i occasionally go for a few drinks and i will be going to the darts next week so i shall be drinking, i havent had an issue with taking my tablets and drinking, my box says to avoid alcohol rather than a straight do not take it, i dont want to stop taking it and then be in incredible pain the next day because of it but i stand by others it would probably be worth us both asking our GPs what is best to do

Hi there, has your medication helps treat depression and alcohol is also classed as a depressant it may not be good to mix the two ? From what I have read Alcohol is a CNS depressant, so it can act on similar areas of the brain as other depressant substances.

On its own, drinking too much alcohol (either in one sitting or consuming a lot of alcohol over time) can lead to lasting physical harm to many different organ systems. When mixed with other drugs that act on similar areas of the brain, the risk of poisoning, overdose, and death greatly increases.

So I guess that's why the medication states to avoid alcohol but if you can't one or two drinks may be ok in moderation. But if you intend to have several and often long term may not be good to mix them both Just my opinion. I'm not adverse to a glass or 3 of wine myself :)

But if ever unsure about mixing any medication with drink best to either ask your GP or your pharmacist. Better to be safe than sorry xx

I think everyone is right. The only one who can answer the question for an individual is their Doctor. I had an admission for Depression and Anxiety 3 years ago into hospital for 6 weeks. It involved doing some groups where this was discussed. The advice was to never stop taking your anti depressants or knowingly to miss doses. Generally we were told the odd drink wouldn’t be a problem unless you are advised specifically not to by the prescribing doctor but alcohol is a depressant if drunk in excess.

As I said. This is just what I was told in a group session it is not advice I am not on the AD you are on, I am on the alternative one but take it at a much higher doze (venlafaxine, 225mg) and I don’t know how this relates. I do know that people are able to enjoy a moderate amount of alcohol on venlafaxine - I talked to my doctor about it 10 days ago

The NHS leaflet on Duloxetine says: "Can I drink alcohol whilst taking duloxetine?

Drinking alcohol may make you more drowsy, restrict alcohol intake to 1-2 units per

day (1 unit=1/2 pint beer or lager, small glass wine or measure of spirit). Consider

avoiding alcohol if drowsiness is a particular issue for you."
