This community needs some rules!

I was very distressed to read a post from someone purporting to be about to take their life (not because of Fibro but because of other issues in their life) and was very surprised that matters had been allowed to get so far online without someone from Health Unlocked stepping in to say the matters being posted were inappropriate to what is (I thought) a self-help group with a focus on managing one's Fibro symptoms and treatment. I was just going to leave it but as a new member and someone who used to work in a business that had to be careful about managing its online forum I felt I should speak up for the silent majority. I appreciate that this lady needed help, but it really shouldn't be left to other members to worry about what she was/wasn't going to do - someone from the sponsoring companies should have stepped in and diverted her concerns to someone with professional knowledge. We have enough to contend and (I'm sorry) there are plenty of other chatrooms where domestic issues CAN be discussed among people with similar experiences The forum has strict rules about protecting our anonymity and I think it should have other rules about what can/cannot be published when it comes to anything other than the reason we joined up (in my case, coping with Fibro). I know we all have days when we're depressed, and if that's caused by the Fibro that's a good reason for it being a topic for discussion - but not stuff about OTHER things in our lives, and certainly not suicide threats. End of rant! I know some of you will now want to stick pins in my effigy, but this sort of thing isn't why I joined and if there's a load more of it I will be leaving. You're all very kind, lovely people, but you've got enough to contend with - you cant save lives too!

I have turned off replies as this is more about the admin process. I would like to assure you that in situations like this the admin team do contact members to offer support and resources. But in a practical sense there is very llittle that we can do beyond this. The anonymity present on this forum is not the same as someone calling our helpine where we can report and potentially break confidentiatlity if it is required.

That leaves us with 2 options after providing what support we can. We can turn off replies and/or remove the post. But in this instance the other option was appropriate as the community was offering support and it may not have been a cry for help.

This community is monitored by volunteers on behalf of FMA UK while the Health unlocked team look after the technical side of things and do not moderate content.

If anyone has any issues with how the admin team are running the site then get in touch and we can have a conversation which we are happy to have.

EDIT:

The admin team will often turn off replies to allow us time to form a reply or pm the person concerned. A conversation can have many people contributing and it is less work for the admin volunteers if we turn replies off initially to give us time to think.

Posts that then pop up that say what about that post do not help and if they question the admin decision to do this they are infringing the rules of the forum as well.
