Hi im 44 and was told i had fibro about 2 years ago. I am still not settled on anything to help and at the moment i am being weaned off gavenpentin as have had a reaction to it. It has really effected my short term memory to the point i am thinking i am going mad. It is effecting me emotionally as well. I just wondered if anyone else had experience anything like this with these meds. Also advise on how to cope during the wean off period will have no medication at all then really worried.

Hi Fionaclaire,

There are a few of us on here for whom prescription meds are not an option, myself included. How to manage - well that is the question. As you are aware fibro is so different for all of us so what works for one may not work for another. I can only speak personally and others on here will have different stories/opinions. For me cutting out processed foods, refined sugars and most gluten helps and I am certainly aware when I stray from this as the IBS kicks in big time. I have regular, when I can afford it, appointments with chiropractor and hypnotherapist. I take various supplements including vit D. If you have had blood tests and are low vit D will help reduce pain. Regular blood tests needed as it is possible to overdose on vits and supplements. Gentle exercise, even just a walk down the garden helps mentally and physically. Learn to pace yourself - if you ever manage this one let me know. I am my own worst enemy. Have a good day do lots then suffer the following day! Epsom salt baths help with the muscle aches and pains. And the best advice I can offer - keep posting - no question too silly as you can bet that someone else has either asked it in the past or is wondering exactly the same thing. Good luck with the weaning off the meds, didn't take mine long enough to need weaning off so can't really offer advice on how to do it and stay relatively well but someone else will.

Afternoon fionaclaire

I had trouble with morphine which I thought was affecting my memory, thought I was loosing my marbles, very scary, though I wasn’t on it long enough to be problematic coming off it. And am fortunate enough to have other meds I can use.

Dinkie has some good advice for you, all I can add is please talk to your pharmacist where you get your medications, he/she can give excellent advice on reducing and tapering medications, also can help to understand interactions and side effects, they are also great at suggesting other drugs which may work better for you, you could then suggest these to your doctor. Hope this helps. X
