As far as I'm aware Cazzycat it has to be a Rheumatologist.
Hi Virgo1
In the past, many of us were referred to and received our diagnosis from Rheumatologists but recently there has been more people being diagnosed by GP's. I believe in a bid to diagnose Fibro more quickly avoiding long waits for referrals plus the cost saving no doubt is a factor.
Since the change in the American College of Rheumatology, it seems this was to aid general practitioners to make a diagnosis of Fibro, see below;
The 2010 ACR criteria were aimed at simplifying the diagnosis of FMS and being suitable for use in primary care practice without requiring a tender point examination.

Mine was from other tests at a rheumatologist. Then had a second opinion. Had xrays, ultrasound, blood tests, nerve conduction tests. When everything else is 'normal', you're left with fibro.
There is no reason why a doctor can not diagnose Fibro. They run all the blood tests. They can send you for any x Ray's plus they can check your tender points. So yes a doctor can diagnose Fibro Imo xx
I believe both can diagnose it. In both mine and my daughter's case , fibro was confirmed by a rheumatologist and then we were discharged as in our PCT there is a protocol put in place for the GP to follow
Thank you kindly for all your replies was at a clinical psychologist who questioned my dianosis x
I was diagnosed by my doctor three years ago!
Mine took ten years. Was a long tiring journey. Rheumatologist doctors scans MRI etc. but they also use process of elimination , and in the end , with my symptoms worsening it was finally diagnosed. Don’t let them take so long with you. Good luck 👍🏻
