No child should have cancer!!!

Please let me know how to understand how children have to fight for their life because of cancer?

My 5 yr old grandson was diagnosed with leukemia on 8/26/2016 and my poor daughter and my son in law are only 23 and they're devastated... We are in and out of the hospital at least 3 times a week and it is life changing and I wish I could take all this devestestation from them.

I'm not looking for pitty, but please anyone have any words of wisdom or advice I would so appreciate it.

I have realized my daily complaints aren't even worth it and seeing my grandson sick and fighting for his life but he's more positive than all of us and he's my soldier and my hero!!

Children are amazingly resiient and cope much better than the adults around them.

Keep your tears for when you are at home, and try to act normal around him. If he does something naughty, tell him off just like you would ordinarily.

Other than that it is a perfect time to play lots of games, look at books, build with lego and things that do not require a lot of energy from him or you.

I have read that childhood leukaemia can be successfully treated in most cases. It is just getting through this stage which is the hardest.

Thinking of you and wishing all your family well, particularly the little one!

In my experience and as has been said act as you normally would around your grandson, it will be difficult for all of you but children are very matter of fact about illness. Concentrate on supporting your Daughter and son in law and also look after yourself, your Grandson will get the best care. Thinking of you all at this difficult time xxxx

Hi there

I have to say that I agree with bluebell99 and Lou1062 .

I think what energy you do have should be concentrated on your daughter and son in law.

All this stress will also add to your illness, so don't forget to look after yourself too - it's not selfish, it's important.

My heart goes out to all of you.

You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi Deb, I am so sorry to hear the heart-breaking news about your grandson. It must be so difficult for you not only to deal with this but also to witness your daughter’s suffering. I can’t offer any magic words of wisdom as I am sure you are already doing everything you can. All you can do is continue to be there for your daughter, son-in-law and their little boy. Kids are tougher than we realise and it sounds like he has a wonderfully positive spirit so take strength from that. Be the caring, lovely mum and granny you normally are. On a practical note make sure you make the most of any local support available to you and your family. You are probably already aware of this but there are support groups that can offer emotional and even financial support for families who have a little one ill in hospital. Sending you all my prayers, positive vibes and best wishes. Take care lovely. xxx

Hi Debco. The only thing I can say is the kids, that young don't really get the concept of how ill they are. That part of their brain doesn't work that way yet. It's terrible and awful and soul destroying. But whilst your daughter and Hubble are in the middle of it. Whilst they have something to do they will feel stronger. When he goes into remission and they can breath. Be there for them as that is likely when they will crash and burn. Take care

Thank you for your kind words and we are positive and thankful for him and we do the best we can everyday
