That changed it completely in my head.

My husband is a crunchy pb guy. I am a smooth pb girl.

No, no , no! Lol. Suppose if you like smooth it will also be nice! 😀

naturalnikki profile image
naturalnikki in reply toClumsy_Mrs

My dad ate crunchy, so growing up I ate it a lot. It's not bad, just on bread I prefer the smooth.

I love dipping a buttery biscuit (southern kind not the "cookie" biscuits that yall have/not sure what to call my buscuit) into bar b q sauce. And yeast dinner rolls into steak sauce.

Clumsy_Mrs profile image
Clumsy_Mrs in reply tonaturalnikki

Are you American Natrualnikki? Are you a peanut butter and jelly fan? 😷

naturalnikki profile image

Yes. Strawberry jelly with smooth peanut butter.

Clumsy_Mrs profile image
Clumsy_Mrs in reply tonaturalnikki

I tired strawberry jam and peanut butter and was very unwell, lol. Funny how different are bodies all are!

I am not sure what a yeast dinner roll is but steak sauce sounds nice! 🍖

naturalnikki profile image

Clumsy_Mrs profile image
Clumsy_Mrs in reply tonaturalnikki

Sponge/cloth to wash, tea towel to dry 😄

Clumsy_Mrs profile image
Clumsy_Mrs in reply tonaturalnikki

Biscuits we do! Love a good biscuit!!!! Custard Cream etc. We have like Swiss rolls lol.

Clumsy_Mrs profile image
Clumsy_Mrs in reply toClumsy_Mrs

Just searched yeast dinner roll. They look like bread rolls to me lol.

naturalnikki profile image
naturalnikki in reply toClumsy_Mrs

Yea. Pretty much, just yeast.

naturalnikki profile image
naturalnikki in reply toClumsy_Mrs

Though some people around here would question putting custard into a biscuit like ours, I would gladly add it. I have put dulce de Leche into a biscuit- to die for. Oh my gosh.

Well I say all that but people put jelly in there biscuits. Or sausage and white gravy smothered biscuit. - not really my taste but it's huge around here.

lyzzie profile image
lyzzie in reply tonaturalnikki

What is white gravy? Lyzzie x

naturalnikki profile image
naturalnikki in reply tolyzzie

A gravy made out of butter flour and milk.

Maybe more accurately named country gravy.

KrissyB profile image
KrissyB in reply tonaturalnikki

I think this kind of sauce is also called béchamel?

Clumsy_Mrs profile image
Clumsy_Mrs in reply toKrissyB

That's it, thought it was named something else here!

KrissyB profile image
KrissyB in reply toClumsy_Mrs

No, it appears we were lazy and just used the French name! :)

naturalnikki profile image
naturalnikki in reply toClumsy_Mrs

Our swiss rolls are cake, that's the same thing you are talking about right

Clumsy_Mrs profile image
Clumsy_Mrs in reply tonaturalnikki

Dulce de leche sounds so nice but still haven't tired it!

I have seen white gravy on USA food shows but I just looked up ingredients and wouldn't call it gravy! Lol.

Yea, Swiss rolls are cakes! It's the only roll that I could think of lol.

I like cold custard, my hubby think I am werid! Lol. They bought out vanilla salted caramel Custard here, yummy!

P.S. What do you wipe you plate clean with?

🍪

naturalnikki profile image
naturalnikki in reply toClumsy_Mrs

Dulce de Leche is super simple to make. I put sweetened condensed milk into mason jar seal the lid tight. Put it into a slow cooker fill it with water so it's completely submerged and cook it for 10 hours on low.

Simply amazing. I'll give those jars out around holidays and they are always a hit.

naturalnikki profile image
naturalnikki in reply toClumsy_Mrs

Well if there is a roll or biscuit, it gets the first wipe around the plate. ;)

Then sponge, then dishwasher, I'm a prewasher. I have a friend who thinks I am crazy for prewashing. I just don't feel a dishwasher does that good of a job. At least I've never used one that did.

Clumsy_Mrs profile image
Clumsy_Mrs in reply tonaturalnikki

Oh my gosh, I just made a complete wolly of myself! Didn't I? You were talking about food and for some reason I thought you asking about washing up, lol. Sorry!

I might give that a try on day but having cooked or use my good old slow cooker, since I am now a hazard in the kitchen (falls, accidents) I might ask hubby to do it, haha. Sounds like a nice simple gift to give! 😄

naturalnikki profile image

What may I ask is salad cream? Is it like ranch dressing? A cream based salad dressing?

Oh oh. Do yall have cottage cheese?

Clumsy_Mrs profile image
Clumsy_Mrs in reply tonaturalnikki

Apparently according to my search it's a thicker version of your miracle whip?

It hard to explain what it is but it made with oil and egg yolk! 😄 I prefer it more then most condiments!

naturalnikki profile image
naturalnikki in reply toClumsy_Mrs

I like miracle whip on a sandwich. It's a northern thing I picked up. If you ask for it here in the south, they look at you like you're crazy and ask where you're from.

annacruachan profile image
annacruachan in reply tonaturalnikki

Egg, vinegar, oil and seasoning make what we call mayonnaise here. No cream included but it tastes creamy . As well as salads I use it with baked or fried fish, as a dip, and as a sauce for tortillas and wraps - if it suits the ingredients of course, it's lovely with chicken.

What we call salad cream is basically the same mixture but stabilised with flour - and it's not a patch on the real stuff!

lyzzie profile image
lyzzie in reply toannacruachan

sounds good anna, I like salad cream, but wouldnt worry if it wasnt there, mayonnaise is good with chicken. Comes down to what we like the taste of doesnt it? I would like to try squid. Lyzzie x

lyzzie profile image
lyzzie in reply tonaturalnikki

whats miracle whip? lyzzie x

naturalnikki profile image
naturalnikki in reply tolyzzie

From my understanding it is like your salad cream only a little thinner. I guess.

The tangy zip of miracle whip. -commercial. It is compared to our mayonnaise. But most people either like one or the other.

Our mayo is just eggs&oil& vinegar, I guess. Where the miracle whip is flavored more. I guess that explains it. Maybe not. :)

TerryT1 profile image
TerryT1 in reply tolyzzie

Hidden and lyzzie .

It is good to know that perhaps some things don't change then!

My school was progressive for using green 'blackboards'! Can you imagine now it's all computer whiteboards and wipeable markers. My school couldn't even afford felt-tip pens, let alone wipeable ones instead of chalk. He...I remember the teachers practically rioting because all they had been given were rectangular blocks of 'French' chalk. They were hard, screeched on the board like fingernails and the writing was so faint, we couldn't see what was written if the sun shone on it! The reason it was bought was that it was cheap and with it being hard and faint, it lasted forever it seems! The teachers weren't stupid, they started leaving it behind an the ledge under the board, so the kids would steal it all the time to throw at each other! That way they could put in a requisition for another years stock of normal stuff!

in reply toTerryT1

Ohh, my that was hard for you all. As you said children theses days don't realise.

I never had the recipe as a kid, so we always got ours in white paper bags from local shops. Can you imagine Health and Safety these days? They were knocking put trays of the stuff in their own kitchens, breaking it into irregular-sized pieces, and shoving them into bags with hands that didn't have gloves on!

I used to love the shrink-wrapped trays you could get, with their own little hammers. We could never afford anything so posh though, so we got the loose stuff the shop owners used to make and if it was too big for my gob, my grandad used to get the hammer out of the shed, shake the spider off it and smash it with that! How on earth did we survive???

lyzzie profile image

Think about it, bread was wrapped in tissue paper, if you brough loose sweets the lady used to just stick her hand into the jar, were still here!

Ox Tongue sandwiches are pretty nice, although it helps not to think about what it is! Also I love a 'Welsh breakfast' with lava bread (seaweed) patties.

I get you, sounds nice actually, but I have a BIG confessions, I dont know how to cook. I can manage a chicken to roast, but beyond that I have no idea, Im just not interested, I can bake, that comes from school, but proper cooking, nope. I tried to cook a rice pudding once using flaked rice as angie said it would be simpler, I didnt get the mixture right and you had to slice it like a cake. My attempt at dumplings was a disaster, i thought you had to use the whole packet of suet, I wont try and describe what it turned out like. We all have our good points! cooking isnt mine. Lyzzie x

Oh dear. I'm partly responsible for this post and I missed it, as I had to go because of the pains!

So I'm late to the dance-I'm sorry everyone, but perhaps I can make up for it with several things I genuinely love...but might not be to everyone's taste...

Let's start with a drink!

Alcoholic, is easy. Half-and-half white rum (like Malibu if you can't get ordinary white rum) and Scrumpy. I mean real scrumpy, made from fermented apples in a bathtub and not-possibly-legal scrumpy! Not easy to get, but this 'cocktail' I invented and call a 'King Cobra' as it's a wonderful anesthetic. You don't think it's had any effect, but wonder why you can't seem to stand...

Non-alcoholic drink is also easy. Take a Lemsip (original, not extra-strength or blackcurrant or anything) and mix into a little Vimto cordial. Fill up with diet Cola, preferably Coke or Pepsi. About 9/10ths of the glass should be the fizzy drink! For some reason I seem to find this both fortifying and excellent at clearing my head when I have the snuffles.

A non-alcoholic and non-medicinal drink...Well, that would have to be a nice cup of tea with a few drops of vanilla extract in it.

Food, well some of it is on Ken's (TheAuthor 's) pinned food post here:

healthunlocked.com/fibromya...

But that is fairly mundane stuff like my three-cheese mash, Australian Damper bread and American Peach Cobbler.

I also posted there a link to an article about some of the most unusual international recipes that sound really nice-The German Fried Egg cake and the Currywurst recipes really make me drool!

But for my own stuff. Well... Cold pizza with chip shop curry and salt and vinegar is particularly nice!

Get some nice toast, plenty of butter and a slice of boiled ham, or Spam! Really nice with some cheese also (Thanks to my Grandad for that one!)

Thanks to my neighbours a while ago - Chicken or Turkey sandwiches with Daddies or HP brown sauce! It was completely new to me, but wonderful when I tried it and a great way to get rid of Christmas leftovers...

Thanks to Pete at school, I was introduced to crisps on toast!

More multicultural (and entirely my fault this one), is Indian Onion Bahjis with Greek Feta Cheese. If you are making them yourself, coat a lump of feta with onion bahji mix and fry (a bit like a Scotch egg is made).

Sandwiches? I love buttered bread, cheese and slices of pickled beetroot...Incredibly messy as everything goes purple as the bread gets all soggy and falls apart in you hand, skittering slices of beetroot everywhere...

For a sweet? Hmm...try a chocolate-chip cookie with peanut butter on it! I came across this only two weeks ago and it is lovely.

Cadbury's dairy milk chocolate with sea salt.

This seems to be most of my weird stuff. But knowing my memory I've probably forgotten something? I will post more if I have...

Oh, and don't knock chicken with baked beans, beef gravy and lashings of Coleman's mint sauce (diluted with lot's of Sarson's malt vinegar) until you have tried it! It's my all-time favouite meal of all!

Terry!! I cant believe you eat half of that stuff!!! Chicken & Beans? Excuse me while my stomach stops recoiling, have to admit though I often add mint sauce to soups!, especially when Ive thinkened it with instant mash. I do love my fish fingers though, theres a place near me where they sell their own fish cake, they are delicious in a roll as well. One thing I could never eat is that fish stew that the french eat, I'll attempt to spell it, Bouliabase?

Crisp sandwich is better then on toast! 😄 I must admit a few of these seem a bit gross. Have you try the Lindt chocolate with chilli, that's a werid one! Definitely thinking of trying a few of theses!

P.S. Bread must always be buttered!

TerryT1 profile image
TerryT1 in reply toClumsy_Mrs

You know you just made all our American friends feel sick? It the bread and butter thing we do. I can't agree more that bread should always be buttered, but it is totally different in America. They almost never butter bread. American sandwiches seem very dry to me, but that's because I'm a Brit and used to buttered bread. They will sometimes use mayo, but usually nothing.

I had a salt and vinegar crisp butty last night oddly enough. I've been eating Spam and cheese ones for so long, that I'm desperately looking for other things that are cheap, filling and hopefully not too expensive. Meat is always the problem, I get anemic, but can't afford much real meat, so it's almost always tinned Frankfurters or Spam.

Try tinned Franks on buttered bread with pickled beetroot, that was another good one, especially with a bit of Primula cheese spread...or Dairlea on an off day for me.

Lindt Chocolate with chilli...That seems to ring a bell, but I don't think I've actually tried it? I might have only read about it.

Do you think any of the famous telly chefs are reading our stuff and picking up ideas from us???

in reply toTerryT1

Do you, like, sardines I'm tomatoe sauce from a Tin?

That's cheap really good for you.

I put it on toast with salt and wet pepper then warm under a grill, love it.

Hi Terry, I definitely think if our post were locked they would have loads of ideas, lol. I really like spam too, never had in a sandwich. What about tinned corned beef? I also seen tinned pulled pork (I haven't tried it) Afamily member of mine likes tinned meatballs in a roll!

Personally I didn't like the chilli chocolate but you have to try it. Normally the stranger mixes are the nicest!

No offence to our America friends but I thought they lived butter on everything. On Man Vs Food that's all I see ,lol.

Meatballs on a roll? OK, that's a new one to me... I bet it is nice though, you would have bread with a meal that had meatballs after all.

I love tinned corned beef with Daddies brown sauce! I've had to give it up though as I can't seem to get the corned beef as cheaply as Spam.

Perhaps butter is a regional thing in America? I really only know the East coast/New England part well and there they not only don't seem to use butter, but think it's sickening to have it on bread. Only on toast apparently.

Clumsy_Mrs profile image
Clumsy_Mrs in reply toTerryT1

I could live on bread and butter!

I am not a fan of meatballs in tin but apparently squashed in a sandwich roll, it's nice! Lol. Let me know if you try!?

That's a shame about corned beef, yummy! I know there are cheaper 'supermarket' brand versions but they are not as nice!

TerryT1 profile image
TerryT1 in reply toClumsy_Mrs

Tinned corned beef isn't even that many calories if you look at the tin. Then consider I scrape all the fat off it as well. It's really filling too...If only I could get it a bit cheaper. I do remember once it went on sale for a really good price and cleared the shop out of all the 47 cans they had! He gave me a grim face the next time I went in because the wholesalers had sold of them and so I'd got every can but one that he'd bought for all of his customers. Apparently that one can I missed, was because he'd already taken it off the shelves for his lunch!

Reading what you said about the meat balls rolled in bread, caused me a sort of mini-flashback. Do you or does ANYONE remember the name of the brand of the tins you used to (still can?) get of stuffed pork roll? Do you know I might not have had that for a quarter of a century? That sounds so long ago! Crikey I'm getting awfully old...

I couldn't for the life of me remember the name of the tinned stuffed pork roll? I think it was this:

I remember the name 'Tyne Brand' but I seem to remember it in a white can, with the lable printed directly on the metal and not a paper lable anymore. I think this might be an early one, but look where it is...

Oh yes, I REALLY like all of these as well lyzzie ! You should hear what my wonderful wife used to say about it! She even used to complain that her eyes would water from the vinegar fumes...

Chicken/Turkey with baked beans came from my Gran. It was Sunday dinner, a small chicken with stuffing, mashed potatoes, roast potatoes, baked beans and lots of brown gravy. The reason is 'lost in the mists of time' sort of thing, as I have no idea why I got that for Sunday dinners for as long as I can remember. It might have been that baked beans were the only 'veg' I could eat as a kid? I would never touch any green veg at all, except for occasionally a few peas. It was only years later that I found out I'm a 'super-taster' (I'm a genetic mutation!!!), but what it means is that I have a variation on one of my genes that makes chlorophyll in green leafy vegetables, taste very bitter. So I used to get hit, just because I could taste things more strongly!

As for the mint sauce, I can't eat chicken or turkey without it! I have absolutely no idea where it came from. It was always part of the Sunday/Christmas diner and I love it!

Once just to prove something to my wonderful wife, I did drink a (small) cup of neat malt vinegar on it's own and undiluted! I will however admit to it making me let out a right burp afterwards. Sorry! The things she would call me for that... (grin!)

hi terry, we always had mince sauce with chicken and turkey, we never bothered with the rules in our family, not that we could afford lamb, we always had mint sauce with cottage pie, anything we fancied. My brother used to love that horrible processed cheese, looked like squares of rubber, he had it in sandwiches with tomatoe sauce. Thats odd about the green vegetables, my ganda used to grow lots, so did mum, but pease arnt one of my favorites, and mushy peas are disgusting. I havnt forgotten your soup on sandwiches!!. In tesco they sell at reduced prices the ham and stuff they havnt sold the day before, you can find some really good bargains. Lyzzie x

Yes, it's the soup butty that seems to stop people and make them think...I wait until they have settled down a bit, before I let them in on the fact that I butter the bread first... Well, the soup is quite salty and it goes so well with the butter...Lurpak!

recipe for my Ideal Salad!

A THIN bed of lettuce if you REALLY have to...

Two boiled eggs, sliced

Two large tomatoes, sliced

A can of Spam sliced, or similar boiled ham sliced

Half a jar of pickled beetroot

About 1lbs of grated strong cheddar, or crumbled Cheshire/Lancashire cheese

Potato salad to taste (no, I'm not being facetious here...)

About half a cup of vinegar lashed all over everything (the cheese should soak up a lot of it, becoming effectively, pickled cheese..

About 2 days worth of salt sprinkled lovingly all over everything

Absolutely NO bread, or oil/salad dressing - Ruins the vinegar!

Don't eat all day, you need to be really hungry and it is about a day's worth of calories here.

Devour! If you get it right, the vinegar you put on and from the pickled beetroot should leave you sweating at the end, like a strong curry meal will.

I've not had this in years with being more cautious with the calories these days, but I remember those salads fondly!!!

I probably am lyzzie . It might explain why midges make a bee line for me! (can midges make a bee line?)

One day they will try to take a blood sample, and the needle will dissolve...

You know those reddy-brown plastic bottles of Sarson's vinegar you can buy? Lasts me about 5 days. I buy 5 litre plastic drums of it from Asda.

Since I'm having to be very careful with money right now, I've cut the vinegar in half. and also go for the cheapest brand. It's not the same...

The bizarre thing is that I can't drink coffee and still don't like green leafy vegetables much as the taste is too strong for me... I dunno, I'm just weird!

Your salad sounds very nice! A little mild for me perhaps, but still very nice.

You should know...with my salad the potato salad is best eaten by the forkful from it's container. Better not to put it on the same plate as the mayo curdles in the vinegar...I'm OK with that, I'm used to it! But it might put you off??? Ahm!

lyzzie profile image

I dont drink coffee anyway, the caffeine plays hell with my heart beat. I have de-caff Tea. I do love cheese, but thats expensive as well isnt it? they say now we are out of the EU the prices are going to get worse. Do you live in a city Terry? Im in the country, and we have lots of farm shops around us that are much cheaper than the supermarkets. I dont shop in our local shop, we only have the one, their bread is £1.80 a loaf as opposed to the supermarkets 80p, thats a big difference. I like vinegar on cabbage, you know I had no idea what a lot of different tastes we all have!. I think no.1 for me would be the banana mashed on toast, you must try it, dont use unripe ones though, you need to be able to squish them. Bananas are also quite cheap, I prefer thick sliced toast.

Yes lyzzie I'm right in the centre of a big city. It's why food is cheap, but it has no quality. I've tried about 40 different 'types' of onions from different supermarkets and they are all the same. Sweet onions, shallots, red onions, vidalias, they are all bitter and or ridiculously strong raw and completely tasteless cooked.

I've just been told there are sanctions against me, because I'm not co-operating over my children. Yuo should have heard the long silence on the phone this morning when I said I don't have any children. She's contacting the person who worked out the form to try and find out what on earth is going on?

Anyway, all I have left is what was left after my wife's funeral, so I have to slow down spending money as much asI possibly can. I'm basically living off cheese and sometimes spam sandwiches, and whatever is left in the fridge & freezer. When I've gone in (years ago) they say they have things sorted out, take all the details and make all the right noises, but nothing had changed and the mistakes carried on being made. You don't know how bizarre it feels to be told officially I have a whole family I'm not supporting, when they do not and never have existed! I'm beginning to feel like the only sane one left here...??? I have to admit, that having just lost the only real family I have left (my wonderful wife), it's really upsetting. I mean people wouldn't believe this if I called the papers.

All this because some idiot didnt do their job properly, it just doesnt make any sense what so ever, maybe you should tell the papers, local MP, anyone who will listen!.

Terry, no offence, but do you have food banks around where you live? it might help you through this time? You could always donate back to them when thing do settle. It would help you out at a bad time. I feel stuck because I dont know how to help you.

Best wishes terry. Lyzzie x

lyzzie I had to go and have a sleep, I was feeling so bad. I'm sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I think this level of 'mistakes' should be exposed, but I can't do it. I'm just not up to any more fights right now. I've had to stuffing well and truly knocked out of me.

No offense taken about the food banks, they are a good idea, but I can't get to any of them. I have called them, explained my situation, but not one of them has been willing to help. Saying they 'don't deliver'. So the only help I've been able to get is the Vicar who did a sermon on 'Devotion' and used my wife and I as the subject of it and has brought me some items every month or two. While a friend of my wife's (who is only on benefits herself) and yet has been bringing me odd bits of food also. If I do get benefits and it's is backdated, I will be paying them both back, I feel so guilty and yet right now I don't have any choices.

Thank you so much for your kind words Lyzzie.

you dont need to feel guilty about people helping you, they wouldnt do it if they didnt want to. Thats horrible about the food banks, they are there to help people, not be dismissive like that. Im so sorry Terry I feel as bad as you and wish I could help and I dont know how. Can you talk about you wife or does it upset you? How long have you been a widower? You never forget them terry but you'll be able to get through the day without her dominating your life, it takes a lot of time, but it does change, just hang in there okay? I've lost 3 people I cared for, two of them deeply, actually, make that 4, I think it took me about five years to put things behind me a bit, but when I dont feel well, well, I still want my mum. Bless you Terry, I could throttle these people for putting you through this at the worse time in your life. Lyzzie x

TerryT1 in reply tolyzzie

Thank you very much lyzzie . Feeling guilty about seemingly everything is a very big part of the problems I have. Being brought up to believe everything is always my fault and so on.

I guess food banks are overstretched. I can't hide the fact that I was so disappointed at their dismissive attitude. I mean I can't be the only one who is too ill to go to these places, especially without a car? I mean if I could afford a taxi, I wouldn't be needing the food in the first place. And even then it is a big strain physically. I can't be the only one in that situation, but I don't know how others cope with it.

I lost my most wonderful wife 6 months ago now. It is still all feeling so unreal, like a nightmare but one I'm not waking up from.

I've lost everyone. No close family anymore and my only friends are on here.

You really are most kind. Thank you so much for your words.

This may sound awfully gross but it is fantastic --- a sandwich with slices of a good meaty poultry stuffing like M&S pork, sage and onion, squished cold sprouts and cranberry sauce .sprinkled with a little salt and pepper.Just the thing on Christmas night when you really feel there's no room to fit in anything else but are still peckish. Yum yummy and even more yummy.

If I can add vinegar, it sounds good to me!

Crusee profile image
Crusee in reply toTerryT1

Haven't tried vinegar but these are great at lunchtime on Boxing Day with a bottle of cold beer-- very yum yum.

It's an acquired taste, but after reading some other combinations on this post I don't think it's so bad in comparison.

Oh no, this is quite digestible compared to some of my stuff! That's why I'd have no problem with trying it! Actually it does sound very nice to me.

I used to have pork and stuffing sandwiches as a kid, which might be why I can imagine what yours would taste like so clearly and know I'd like it!

Stuffing is only really bread anyway, so it's going to taste good I bet!

Thank you.

Crusee profile image
Crusee in reply toTerryT1

If you don't have cranberry try apple sauce.........

But you can't get away with a low grade stuffing that's what makes it.

TerryT1 profile image
TerryT1 in reply toCrusee

Yes and I think I can see why? A low-grade stuffing would be pretty much bread and spices, but a luxury one contains fats which will not only add to the taste, but make it easier to swallow and improve the texture I bet?

Crusee profile image
Crusee in reply toTerryT1

Yes the M&S one is particularly nice.Very rich and very meaty, almost a meal in itself.

You need substance in the sandwich and there's your answer.

TerryT1 profile image
TerryT1 in reply toCrusee

I'm craving stuffing now!

I think I've got some Paxo, a bit of butter, some beans, brown gravy and mint sauce with lots of salt and vinegar! Not exactly sprouts, but I do have an open tin of garden peas. I wonder if I'd be able to cook it?

If I drool on the keyboard, I blame you Crusee !

I used to love watching that! Maybe it's where I got my willingness to try odd combinations of food from?

How they could make meals of some of those combinations of ingredients I'll never know!

Crusee profile image
Crusee in reply toTerryT1

Probably because they only had to taste a very small morsel and fake a smile on their faces it was enough to convince some poor unsuspecting buggar it was delicious.

It must have been undercooked as well, there was no way on earth some of that stuff was cooked in the time allocated .

Oh well if it gets an audience who's to question it?

Remember the 'Galloping Gourmet' Graham Kerr? He used to pick someone out of the audience to taste his meals, but he used to cook them properly as he wasn't on a clock though.

Crusee profile image
Crusee in reply toTerryT1

Ah yes I do remember him.

I always wanted to be that person but a couple of weeks he cooked what in my eyes were revolting dishes, and wouldn't it have been embarrassing if it was a dish you thought was vile.Would you. say something before accepting the invitation to dine with him?

Thinking.back at all of all the TV cooks over the years there have been a pretty mixed bag.

Zena Skinner, flamboyant Fanny,Keith Floyd,to name but a few - and phew it was too!!!!

Right must find a cold drink to take tabs with. Got a banging headache which has woke me,

Catch you later.

I'm sorry about your headache. I hope the pills put paid to it!

I didn't like the sound of the things he cooked on the Galloping gourmet much either, but he seemed so good at it, that I would have loved to have been the person he picked, in the hope that it would taste good anyway?

I'm a bit of a finniky eater anyway, so a lot of what they cook on TV isn't really to my tastes, but I put that down to me, not a lack of their skills!

Headache only just gone after 2 doses of tabs .Wearing me out I seem to gave had it for days .Even teeth aching this morning Knees are bright red , hot , and sore and what the hell is going on?.

I think GG got away with the crap food because he was a good entertainer- there was nothing about him you could dislike really. He always looked like he was putting heart and soul into the food even if it was rubbish so you couldn't help but like him and by then he had stirred everyone up into such a frenzy they wouldn't care what they were eating.

as I have got older my tastes in food have changed - a more mature palate I would prefer to call it.You learn to appreciate the finer things in life eg.Even just little things such as -

I would always buy a chunk of Parmesan cheese now for shaving or grating over bolognese, soups etc as opposed to that foul vomit smelling pre grated stuff they call Parmesan in tubs.

Oops here I go soap box mo e t - shut up crusee you will overstay you're welcome.

Have a good day Terry- so what's on the menu today then?

Well I can't afford to be too fussy right now, so it's really basic stuff this weekend. Grated cheese I got on sale, boiled eggs and turkey spam. Again all were on sale, so it's them all weekend, and probably next week as well. I also have fat free cottage cheese (not on sale), so can't have too much of.

If I get really desperate I've a 99p frozen chicken dinner from 2 years ago and I think 6 more small pieces of bettered fish that was best before 2012 in the freezer. I also have a can of peas and a can of baked beans, so some veg. and variation there!

My tastes have certainly changed over the years. Not as fussy now and more tolerant of green leafy vegetables...but still can't stand coffee of the smell of cooking cheese!

Have you any potatoes Terry?

These are always a good cheap, standard staple to have around.

Do some mashed potatoes.fry a couple of eggs and put on top. Then grate some cheese and grill till melted.

Serve with big chunks if crusty bread- that should fill you up for a bit.

If you need meat then add some turkey spam either to the heap or as an added meat side dish or even a couple of small pieces of the fish.

Budget is the thing which holds us all back.

But always make sure you get spuds in If there's nothing else a big dollop of mash does it for me every time.

Take care,

Me too, more than even soup, mash helps me when things are short. I have some instant mash , but I want to hold onto the next pack until next week. It will hopefully be a while before I have to order again. But when I do, I'm going to be getting more instant mash. Mash and gary, mash and beans and mash and cheeses are all standbys for me.

Mash butties might not be the most appetising of meals, but they ae great when I am cold and/or really hungry.

Thank you Crusee !

I used to love the gravy our school cooks made, and the custard, oh do you remember prunes and custard? We also used to have rhubarb chunks in jelly with a topping a cake crumbs, lovely,
