Fee paying patient now wanting NHS Free services for IVF

Hi guys,

Does anyone have any information regarding my situation?

I have had 2 failed IVF after I had a miscarriage at 17wks in one cycle and one BFN as a fee paying patient when I was not eligible for the Free NHS treatment. Now that I am eligible, can I inform my hospital that I want to join the free NHS treatment or have I been disqualified for being a fee paying patient in the past?

If I can switch to the NHS free treatment, does anyone know how to go about it?

Hi, it depends on where you live and their eligibility criteria. Many hospital trusts do not accept those that have had private cycles previously and some do not accept those that have been pregnant, regardless of the outcome. Some areas offer one cycle and some offer 3 cycles if you are under 40.

Your GP will need to refer you.

*Sorry to hear about your miscarriage.

I hope this helps.

Good luck.

I think Nhs eligibility still depends on your area as to how many rounds you can have paid for (some areas one or two rounds, some none) but your clinic and gp should definitely know about the criteria local to you.

Your gp would be your best place to start with a referral for services.

it is defo different by area but your starting point is your gp for a referral to be added to nhs waiting list , just in case it’s helpful I wanted to mention the policy where I live (Scotland) you can join the nhs waiting list if you have no children, meet the weight and smoking criteria and have NO frozen embryos left from private treatment and are no longer actively in self funded treatment. Hopefully they can reuse some of tests/investigations from self funding though to speed up the process of getting on the right nhs waiting list (it can take a while to even get on it never mind get to the top of it) hope that helps! Xx
