Getting medication elsewhere worth it?

Hi everyone, I hope you all have a lovely Christmas and New years! I would just like to enquire about medication for my cycle, I rang my clinic and told them I would be getting my medication from elsewhere which is cheaper and they told me they would charge 250 pounds for the prescription to take elsewhere, is this normal did your clinic do this? Also, is it worth going somewhere else when paying such an expensive prescription when they quoted me around 1,100 for my medication from the clinic, thank you in advance x

Sorry might I also add, can you get all your medication from asda, like stims and also after medication like progestrone and estrogen or is it just after the egg collection medication x

I would seriously consider threatening your clinic with a complaint to HFEA regarding fair pricing if they’re charging £250 for just a prescription!!! Most are £55/60. That is just extortion. It’s only writing a prescription they were going to do anyway!

I have had mine via The Fertility Medication centre before now - with stims meds especially they can be quite a lot cheaper (I saved £500 before now). I’ve not found as much of a difference with FET meds. You can get all your meds and they are delivered by Stork just like clinic ones are. They will dispatch medication with electronic copy of prescription but you have to then send hard copy in post once you’ve got your meds delivered. Customer service was second to none

Asda locally to me were pathetic. Not like some people’s experience online.

Really, I did think that was a bit much but just didn't know if that was normal, I've just booked a consultation with my fertility doctor for the 27th of January so I will be sure to question why it's so much, also I will take a look at that fertility medical centre thank you, x

You can literally send an email list of meds to the fertility medication centre for a quote to save spending on a private prescription which is really handy. Then if you’re happy with the price you can commit to paying for the private script - though no way you should pay £250. Seriously HFEA, CQC, ombudsman - whoever you need to complain to. They shouldn’t be allowed to operate like that and take advantage of patients. Xx

I know I've been doing a bit of research right now and I'm not to sure I can complain as it says private clinics can charge whatever prices they want as its private, but I'm still going to question why its so much when many people on here either got the prescription for free or less expensive, just seems odd now, I have also sent a list of the medication to the fertility medical centre today, they won't reply until the 2nd of January so will see how much they quote, thank you so much for your feedback, you've probably saved me quite a bit, good luck on your journey 😊 xx

£250 - wowsers! My clinic gave me all my prescriptions for free. I got all my medication (including stims) from Asda - at a hugely reduced price compared to some other pharmacies. Personally, I would gently ask your clinic why they charge so much - what exactly do they need to do to necessitate the £250 charge? They’re clearly just trying to deter their patients from buying their meds elsewhere, which is pretty out of order…

Hiya yes I will do, the receptionist was the one that told me it would be that much, so maybe she got it wrong as judging by these responses my clinic is the only one! I would look at going somewhere else but it really suits where we are as it's only 5 minutes from where we live fortunately and it's the only one in our town. Thanks for your reply the advice has helped a lot 🙂

Good luck. I don’t want to add fuel to the fire, but just to note that I had to get a few prescriptions from my clinic. For instance, if they tweaked my meds in the middle of a cycle or if I ran short of some meds, etc. Would they charge you £250 for each individual prescription…??

My clinic gave me prescriptions for free and I was able to decide where to process the prescription. However I did deal with a clinic on a few occasions who were looking into immunology for me and they did charge for prescriptions if it wasn't done at the time of a consultation - I think they charged about £50 x

Okay, thank you for your reply, I would of at least expected it to be around 50 to 100 pounds but when she said 250 I was a bit taken back, I'll ask the question and hopefully get some explanation, x

My clinic charged £150 for a prescription which I thought was a joke so I ended up buying through them as I don't have an Asda locally. It is ridiculous how much they can charge for a bit of paper!

It really does make you feel sick doesn't it, their already getting enough bloody of us, but of course they know people are desperate so they pray on the vulnerable, thanks for your reply xx

That's horrendous, my clinic quoted £850 for medication (via stork) so I got a free private prescription and paid £510 at Tesco it instead. I also arranged a sharps box and collection via my gp for free.

Go to Asda farmacy! They sell the medication and they have a non-profit rule ❤️ i paid 300 pounds for my .medication for a FET in my clinic and afterwards I asked for the prescription for the continuation drugs and for double the amount of drugs I paid £90 something pounds....clinics rip you off!

Hi I was lucky my clinic didn't charge for prescriptions. I rang round a few pharmacies when I needed meds and found Asda the cheapest by far. I have had all necessary meds from them, including but not limited to menopour, lubion , utrogrston, cyclogest, ovitrelle and fermedelle as well as things like steroids and blood thinners, they can get anything if it's available form suppliers. But after a few rounds it can add up and the savings can be significant.
