Bit of a random question. For the past few days I’ve had painful gums in one area, to the point where I went to the dentist today to get it looked at. She thinks it could be gum related and possibly due to additional hormones I’m taking. I was wondering whether anyone else has experienced this? I’ve never had it before - though this is my third transfer where I’ve been using Lubion for the first time.
Apparently it’s common in pregnancy but I’ve only just tested positive a few days ago, and this pain is AGONY! I’m finding it hard to believe this could be linked but just thought to see if anyone has had something similar!

Yes, the fluctuations in hormones may cause additional bleeding and possible minor irritation (gingivitis) but I wouldn’t expect pain especially like you’re describing unless there was something pre-existing ?
Keep the area as clean as possible and if it doesn’t settle I’d go back to the dentist. They probably won’t x-ray the site due to you being pregnant (congratulations!) but if it’s truly a gum issue they could clean the area which might help.
Hi thanks so much for your reply. She actually cleaned the area yesterday and used like an antiseptic liquid thing on the area. It’s just so typical it wasn’t that bad when I went. It hadn’t even been THAT bad when eating but I naughtily ate three haribo strawbs last night (😂) and that’s when it went absolutely mental - whether it was a direct link to the sugar or just coincidence I’m not sure.. Settled after a few hours and after lots of salt water rinses but I can still feel it and I’m absolutely dreading eating anything today😂
She said X-rays are generally safe even with pregnancy but that it was up to me whether I wanted to do one. It was left as use cordysol, salt water rinses and reassess in a week with the hope it’ll be gone by then. Do you think it’s best to avoid X-rays? 👀
I’m wondering if maybe it’s an infection, even though again she said it didn’t look infected. And if so I’m really hoping antibiotics are safe 😕
Thanks for your congratulations ☺️ very very early days 💕
To me that sounds like it’s perhaps decay or possibly an infection starting up. Gums don’t usually cause what you’re describing- it sounds more like it’s a tooth issue. I say this being a dentist.
Tbh dental x-rays are pretty safe these days and there are numerous things that help reduce the radiation exposure (and it’s pointing at your mouth and not abdomen) so the overall risk of harm is extremely low. You’d probably get more low level radiation from a short haul flight. The ultimate decision is yours though.
Many dentists I know, and I myself have have no issues taking non-routine dental x-ray in the first trimester (in the case of dental pain or emergencies) as on the flip side the stress and pain from a dental infection or dental pain can’t be a good thing.
Wow how unbelievably helpful to be messaging a dentist 😂 I actually have one more question but will message you privately to save others from reading about my teeth hahaha xx
