Gestational sac measuring a week behind

Hi all,

We’ve just returned from a 8 week scan, baby looked fine measuring 8 weeks 3 days. However, the sac was measuring 7 weeks 1 day at 21.5mm. Baby was 18.5mm.

We had a scan last week too - the baby has grown 8mm, and so has the sac (it was 13mm last week).

Has anyone experienced this before and had a positive outcome? We are due back for another scan in two weeks. I’m obviously very concerned now and hoped to just have a normal result so I feel less anxious about the whole thing!

Thanks you

I wad told once they can measure baby, can see an heartbeat and fetal pole etc the size of the sac isn’t the important thing, that the sac size is only really important in the earlier stages. What did your clinic say about the sac size? I’m not even sure our clinic measured ours at 8 week scan but they did at the earlier ones xx

Thanks for your response. They didn’t mention anything about the sac at last weeks scan, but I think it was measuring a bit small then. They’ve basically said it is a cause for concern, but she’s not massively worried but it will need to be checked again in two weeks.

However, googling it comes up with all sorts of horrifying stats including ‘90% miscarriage rate’ when sac is less 5mm bigger than baby. I think that was between weeks 5-9.5.

So naturally very worried now!

Oh I can imagine! Are they able to do another scan in a week instead of 2 as that will be a long wait for you 💜 xx

Ah love! Google is your worst enemy when it comes to this kind of thing.

The fact that the embryo is measuring correctly is a good sign. Everything crossed your next scan shows positive news xx

I would say that if the baby is fine - measurement & heartbeat I wouldn’t worry, in fact I thought the sac reduced in size as baby got bigger & then placenta started to grow/take over?

I had a 6+5 scan then one exactly 2 weeks later & although it was pointed out on first scan (it was much bigger than baby) it was never mentioned again. At a 10 week scan I was told I needed to start enjoying the pregnancy as seeing heartbeat x3 times would be very unusual to then miscarry. Concentrate on the heartbeat & baby measuring exactly as they should xxx
