IVF weight gain?

Hi,We're starting our first round of IVF soon and I'm wondering what I can expect in terms of weight gain from the treatment? I've read that it can cause weight gain. Obviously if I get pregnant that will mean weight gain, and I'm fine with that as it'll be worth it, but I'm wondering about people's experiences of weight changes when it hasn't worked.

I lived with eating disorders for the majority of my teens and early 20s. Now, at 30 I've been well for many years, however last year when I was on Letrozole for an extended period it made me gain about a stone and I did find myself having a few wobbles with food and body image until the weight gain stopped. That weight has stayed on, which I'm fine with, and my BMI is roughly in the middle of the healthy range now, but I am a little concerned about further unnecessary weight gain if we have any failed cycles. Mainly concerned about finding it triggering.

Are there any particular medications that people have found to cause weight gain more than others? How much has your weight gone up by? Has the weight come off easily post-treatment or stayed on? Thanks!

hey, first time round I gained 2kg during stimulation. Second time the Nafarelin nasal spray made me gain weight. Roughly 2.5kg. I lost the weight with no issue first time round. I’m still on meds at the moment and not exercising or calorie counting. I’ve lost a tiny bit of the Nafarelin weight and if this fails I imagine I will return to normal with ease because I’ll hit the gym quite hard and go into a tiny calorie deficit but nothing major, just to get back to my normal. I understand the fear of ballooning as I was panicking earlier in the month as I wasn’t over eating and I was exercising a lot and it just kept climbing over a few days. It’s more stable now 😅

I didn’t actually gain any weight during the stimulation process but I was very bloated towards the end / post egg collection & transfer. I would say that took a couple of weeks to subside & then I felt pretty much back to normal. I know everyone’s bodies react differently - The medication I took was menopur, fyremadel & gonassi x wishing you lots of luck x

yeah I gain weight and also find it hard to lose it over the years on IVF, particularly on treatment where I down reg with prostrap burselin. Progesterone can make you feel sluggish and bloated too. Its absolutely part of it as they are often mimicking a pregnancy (or menopause) hormonally so weight gain can be a factor so you might want to prepare yourself for that mentally as it is absolutely ‘worth it’ in the same way as pregnancy as it’s the miracle treatment to get us there 🤗💜 xx

hi, failed ivf over here - I didn’t gain / loose any weight throughout the process and felt pretty much the same as ever, I did stop going to the gym as a precaution but weight stayed the same and I would normally fluctuate quite a bit. Try not to worry too much about it, everyone is different but it’s only for a very very short window of your life at the end of the day and if you do gain it will gradually come off again, good luck
