Looking for info on follicles and trigger shot

Hi there

I've just been told I have 2 follicles of the same size in my left and 2 follicles of different sizes in the right. The biggest is in the right side. They've asked me to come back in 2 days for another scan and if they are happy with the growth they would be giving me a trigger shot incase I don't ovulate on my own.

As they were in a rush I didn't get to ask much. My question is which follicle would be used first as they've told me there are 4 total. And what does the trigger shot do. My consultant didn't mention the trigger shot so it's the first time I'm hearing about this.

Just looking to educate myself on how all of this works.

Thank you 😊

Hi Julie, this might be a silly question but I just wanna check: are you doing IVF or IUI?

If you're doing IUI then the purpose of the trigger shot is to get you to ovulate. In a standard IUI cycle you'll typically ovulate just from one ovary, which in this case would be your right one as that's where the dominant follicle is. They'll then perform the IUI procedure a couple of days later.

In the case of IVF, I believe the purpose of the trigger isn't to make you ovulate (as your agonist meds will prevent this) but rather to give those eggs some extra oomph to mature and be ready for retrieval.

I hope this helps!

Hi thanks for your reply. I'm only on my second cycle of letrozole 2.5mg at the moment. We are not doing IUI or IVF since it's only my second month with them.

Letrozole can be used to encourage ovulation [follicles release the eggs ]and the lining of womb to thicken up in women who do not ovulate on their own The trigger shot is to encourage ovulation then you have intercourse and hopefully the egg and sperm will met ! When next at the clinic ask them to explain how the medication works

Take care
