Has anyone had a saline scan to check the uterus for scarring? If so, was it painful and what kind of pain relief were you given?

Hi lovely,

I had one of these, they are a bit painful when they push the liquid in - it sort of makes you cramp - but you can take a couple of paracetamol before hand to take the edge off.

It doesn't take long though which is good.

x

As previous post says does not take too long Best to take painkillers beforehand and it might be an idea to call ahead and ask them to explain the procedure to you This hopefully will put your mind at ease After exam may have some cramps for day or two again paracetamol should relieve the discomfort

I have had this aqua/saline scan. Unfortunately I did take any paracetamol ahead of the procedure and it was painful. They said it would be like period cramps. As I have never experienced period pain or cramps, I found the procedure extremely painful. I had two nurses holding my hands just so I could squeeze them. Because I moved they could not freeze the image so had to re-do it. They will check your uterus, uterine cavity, ovaries and cervix appearance. They will be checking for hydrosaphinx ie fluid. Mine came back clear - they should be able to tell you straight away or same day. I was prescribed antibiotics. Good luck.

Thank you. May I ask what the antibiotics were for? Is this prescribed as routine?

It is painful- feels like strong period cramps- but it is over very quickly x

I was told I could take ibuprofen before x

Good luck

For me this was the most painful procedure of all the ivf journey and it had to be stopped by the doctor as I really couldn’t take it any longer. I had terrible bleed afterwards too. I suffer from adenomyosis so I get very painful periods anyway, but this procedure had me almost fainting. Saying this, my twin sister tolerated it a lot better. So this really is an individual thing. Good luck! Xxx

I’m interested in this , do your baseline scans indicate any reason to do the saline scan ? My clinic said I don’t need it but I want to check ! Xx

I opted for the saline scan as I wanted to check the condition of my uterus. I thought it might be worthwhile due to my history of endometriosis.

Thank you everyone. Did you have this scan in a separate cycle or in the same cycle as a FET? I'm unsure if I should have it separately and let my body rest first. Did you also need to have a Chlamydia test prior to the procedure taking place?
