Needles on a plane

For the first time, I will have to take injections with me when I fly over for my transfer. Will be hopefully EasyJet or hopefully not Ryan Air. Only ever taken meds before.

Will have hand luggage only. If I take them in the packaging, with a print out of the script and e-mail from the clinic, will that be ok?

We’ve travelled with meds and injections with both Airlines and no problems, never been asked. I’ve always kept them in there packaging minus the outer box as they can be bulky in hand luggage. I always bring my script for proof just incase. Just a tip, bring a jumper for some privacy if you need to take meds and injections mid flight, if you’re not keen on taking them in toilet.

All the very best with your treatment

Thankyou! Good point about the box, it’s huge! Flight is only 2.5hrs so hopefully be ok, but I’ll have a hoodie on cause I’m always cold 😂🙈 x

I had a little pouch in my handluggage with lubion, progesterone pessaries and progynova when I flew. I had a "travel letter" from the clinic on headed paper which said I required the medication for ongoing fertility treatment and requested I be allowed to travel with it in my hand luggage. I just sent my bag through the scanner, needles and all, and no questions were asked. My needles have safety things on them so I just took a little bag and put the used ones in a separate bag and took them home with me for safe disposal (rather than carrying the big box as we had limited luggage). I also added fertility treatment as a disclosed condition on my travel insurance. I kept the bag within my general baggage allowance so it wasn't really anything to do with the airline, just security and they had obviously seen it all before! x

I’ve got a little bag thing that they sent my needles in years ago that I’ve kept “just in case”. Proving I’m in fact not a hoarder as it will be perfect for just this! 😂

Mine retract after use it says on the leaflet. My friend has similar for insulin and disposes with rubbish but I’m not convinced they shouldn’t be in a sharps bin still.

Travel insurance is a good point! I need to renew mine before we go so I’ll add that on.

Previously with we went we almost missed the plane due to the man in front of us trying to take an electric screwdriver through taped up in an old persil capsules box!!! T@#*t!! X

I’ve always said to the security person at the trays ‘I’ve got pre filled syringes, do I need to take them out’ and shown them to them. Every time they have said no it’s fine. Never once been asked to show any documentation. Both in England and Spain. I’ve flown easy jet and always with only hand luggage, but airport security isn’t linked to an airline anyway.

Thankyou so much that’s really helpful 😊

Have done this on RyanAir. It's ok, just bring the script but they never really ask for it. Have a safe flight. xx

I’m with IB too and I have never had a problem carrying Clexane needles although I always ask the clinic to provide a letter just in case.

The Greek airport staff- check in and security- were absolutely fine. They even asked me once if the medication needed to be refrigerated so they could ask the cabin crew. One security staff in a UK airport was quite pedantic about it. Despite the letter he opened up the luggage examined every medication and compared with what was mentioned in the letter. Even opened up the outer boxes and got the prefilled syringes out, they were still in some plastic packaging. He said I should have had each liquid container including prefilled syringes out of the boxes and in a clear bag. However this was only one person. Every other time I was fine.
