6 month NHS wait between 1st and 2nd transfer

Hi all, had my first failed fresh transfer 3 weeks ago now. My clinic told me I have to wait two natural cycles until I can go again on the NHS. My appointment letter came through today, and it’s not until 16th May next year! Which will make my next round 6 / 7 months after my first transfer. I’ve emailed them asking if there is any way of bringing this earlier. But wanted to check if anyone else has experience the this? And had any success in bringing an appointment earlier? Thanks

Sorry to hear of your failed transfer. Can I ask if it’s a FET your waiting 6 months for or another ivf cycle? It seems a rather long time

It’s a frozen transfer I’m waiting for. So feels like a really long wait. They’ve confirmed they can’t bring my appointment forward sadly.

That seems crazy, my clinic fitted me in for 3 fresh cycles in 6 months (due to my age and funding) so it seems bonkers you have to wait that long for a FET. Which clinic are you with?

Hi MiniCeeCee. Oh my oddness, I hear this happening all too often. Unless you have a letter or email with the alleged time on, word of mouth is nothing to go by unfortunately. You can only keep in touch and say you will accept a cancelatio. Drs are on strike for a week after Christmas, and you would be amazed how much that throws everything out. Oh I do wish you well. Thanks Diane, I couldn’t believe it when the letter came through today. They’ve said they’ll put me on the cancellation list, but otherwise I have to wait until May. Feels like such a long time to wait for a frozen transfer. Let’s hope for a miracle in the meantime!

Hi. Do you need a hysteroscopy if not already had one to check your womb and do an endometrial biopsy. That would help fill out the time. Good luck. Diane

Thanks Diane. I’m not sure if I need one. Do you know how I might go about getting / requesting one? The NHS fertility clinic I’m with seem to be suggesting the appointment on the 16th May is needed first before determining next steps. Thanks

hey. I would definitely call regularly for a cancellation/earlier appointment. We had our FET consultant appointment cancelled due to COVID in Dec 2021 and were given a rescheduled appointment in March. I called pretty regularly and had the appointment at the beginning of Jan instead. Started drugs in Feb, transfer end of March. Baby in Dec!! Be a pest…the receptionists at our clinic encouraged it. I never felt like they were annoyed by me calling.

We just had a failed transfer a couple of weeks ago which was NHS funded, now having to pay ourselves for the next cycle as we didn’t have any frozen. They said to us that we have to wait until February, which would be 3months / 3 cycles to start the next year IVF cycle to give my body a break. But 6 months seems a long time I would defo be asking for cancellations . Good luck xxx

I agree with rollecoastersmiles, call the clinic for cancellation regularly. I know of a few cases when this strategy worked.

After my first failed fresh transfer, then for the second which will have been 5 months later my lining wasn’t getting thicker they decided to stop and investigated. It wasn’t till 12 months later they tried again. Sadly I think it will be the amount of people they have waiting for IVF on the NHS. As hard as it is and frustrating, try in the mean time to relax and focus on keeping yourself healthy and ready, enjoy the breather, ask if you can be considered if there are cancellations. I’m sorry about your failed transfer.

I had a fresh in May with the NHS and we were lucky to get a frozen in Sep then Nov. Both weren’t successful and I was surprised to then not get our doctor follow-up appointment till March, with the next transfer likely to be May as well.

From talking to the admin team, it seems there is a lot less doctor coverage in Dec and Jan due to holidays, pushing everything back. Super frustrating when we thought we were getting to grips with the timelines and the clocks not on our side.

I’ve also been put on the cancellation list and trying to stay positive and hope that the break will be a positive thing. Really grateful to be able to try again but it’s such a rollercoaster to be on for so long.

I had two failed transfers with 4 months between. When we were waiting for the third attempt, similarly to your situation, we received notification that we would have to wait 6 months which absolutely crushed my soul. We decided to go ro ate instead of waiting. We were able to use the embryo created on nhs and pay for the transfer and meds only. I’m am now 21 weeks pregnant with twins! I’m not regretting moving on to private care even though it might have worked on nhs, it was really affecting my mental health knowing that there would be a half a year wait.
