Pains and aches in ovaries/uterus, more than a month since ivf treatment

Hi, I am hoping others may have some advise/experienced something similar. I have been having pains in my ovaries and uterus since my ivf treatment (transfer failed). I also had a hysteroscopic resection just before the ivf round for a fibroid. It has been more than a month, and the pains feel like a constant ache in my ovaries. Then also I get sharper pains in my uterus.

I went to GP but they said my stomach is soft so won't refer me. They said since it was private treatment I should ask the clinic for advise, but I had the treatment abroad so am not able to see anyone. Has anyone else experienced this? I am not sure what to do.

Discomfort may be due to changes in hormones levels since treatment cycle Have you had a bleed yet ? May sure drinking plenty of fluids so you do not become constipated as this will cause more discomfort May be trapped wind - try lying flat ,knees gently drawn up and rock from side to side Make sure there is no infection- do you feel hot [ have a fever ] - is urine smelly or discharge smelly if so go back to GP

Hope it settles soon

I had my period a couple of weeks ago, although I still get some random brown spotting. I have not had any other symptoms, but am worried it is cycts and/or scarring from the resection.

May be your ovaries taking their time to settle down If it persists push GP for onward referral or go to A& E if discomfort worsens

Thank you. I will try and see someone else if it doesn't settle.

if you’re in pain you still warrant further assessment. Hand on abdomen examination is hardly foolproof. And the fact you’ve had private ivf care doesn’t do away with their duty of care as GP. Do you have any history of ovarian cysts or endometriosis? I take it HCG was negative?

Hi, Yes, HCG negative. The doctor who did the hysteroscopic resection suspected endometriosis. I hadn't had any issues at all previously, periods always regular and normal (although over the last year I had a few heavy periods and just before the first ivf treatment I had some spotting. The ivf drugs seemed to trigger the adenomyosis growth.

I knew the GP would be useless but I can't afford to go privately. They said I can go to a&e if the pain is very severe (i.e. doubled over) but that was the extent of the help. My anxiety is also very high at the moment, so it felt like they attributed the pain to that instead.

I’m so sorry you’ve had this sort of experience. I have found IVF cycles (either my own oestrogen from developing follicles, or medicated FET) have made my endo and adenomyosis pains worse. So could be all that and taking time to settle hopefully will post cycle. But if you’re in pain and concerned then maybe a second opinion from another GP at the surgery? Have you had any input from gynae just from a pain point of view and endo/adeno?

I’ve just had a pelvic MRI done under NHS gynae even though I’m not eligible (due to AMH level and number of IVF cycles allowed also in my area) for IVF funding any more.

Thank you. I think the anxiety and emotions are making it all worse too.

I will try and see another GP and ask for a referral if it doesn't settle. The ivf clinic said it should not be related to the ivf cycle anymore. I am just worried things are going wrong and if I can ever manage to afford another ivf round it will be impossible.

Thank you for your response, it helps to feel less alone in it all. (I am single so doing everything solo).

Hi! I’m so sorry about what you’re experiencing! A dear relative of mine had lots of pain after her ovarian stimulation. Unfortunately there weren’t embryos who made it to day 6 so she couldn’t have any transfer done, but the pain persisted so she had some exams done. They found an ovarian infection, probably due to the pick-up procedure (it was a very delicate and rather long one since there were several follicles to pick up and she has endo cysts on both ovaries). She was given antibiotics and that, together with the arrival of periods, brought the ovaries back to the normal size and the pain disappeared in some days. She’s doing well now <3 If they haven’t looked for an infection I suggest you ask them to. I wish you good luck!
