I am 5 weeks and 4 days today and I am terrified that everything I do will negatively impact the pregnancy. We have gone through so much to get here and then last Thursday we found out that the pain I had started to feel in my neck is caused by subacute thyroditis. I was in hospital Thursday night and Friday morning as well as all day yesterday. The thyroid values show that I have gone into hyperthyroidism which is why I have irregular and high heart beat. I have lost 1kg in 2 days despite a very rich and balanced diet. They told me they would normally give beta blockers but in my case, due to the pregnancy, it’s up to me and maybe to just take them if the heart feels out of control. My viability scan is Thursday next week and I am full of anxiety and guilt for getting randomly ill (never had a thyroid issue before).
Any advice on how to cope and maintain a positive mindset ?
Anyone has experienced this before ?

The clinic is aware and said that they are not experts and I should follow the advice of the endocrinologist. In hospital I saw an endocrinologist on Friday (which I felt quite confident in) and another one yesterday who didn’t seem quite as good. The one yesterday said that I should go back in 2-3 weeks….
Re keeping a positive mindset- I think you have to remind yourself that some things are out of your control and worrying about it will not change the outcome (easier said than done but you have to keep saying this to yourself). Take it day by day.
First of all, congratulations on your BFP. I went through a similar situation as you in my last and only successful pregnancy (had many losses before) and ended up in hospital with thyroiditis. In my case it was autoimmune and was caused by Graves' disease. I also lost so much weight, despite the fact that I was on high doses of steroids. I had really bad tachycardia (so bad that they were worried my heart would struggle) and had no choice but to take beta blockers. It was very hard and I was very unwell but the good news is that I gave birth to a miracle rainbow baby in April and he was healthy, despite all the medication they had to give me (I had different medication for my thyroid). I hope this gives you hope.
I am aware that some lovely ladies here are still struggling to conceive and I don't want to upset anyone, so please feel free to PM me if you want to ask me any questions about pregnancy with thyroiditis or if you just want a chat. I totally understand how stressful it must be for you and your anxiety. Thinking of you and hope you feel better soon xxx
I am so sorry. I developed sub-acute thyroiditis in August last year, shortly after a failed FET (the two were not related). It was horrendous. They put me on a medication called Carbimazole, which did the trick. I was on it for a couple of months. I mentioned to the endocrinologist that we were TTC/having fertility, and she said if we wanted to continue TTC, there was an alternative medication (also effective) that was safe for pregnancy (Carbizamole wasnt). I'm afraid i don't remember the name.
Thank you so much for sharing your story. Did you have strong pain in your neck, jaws and ears ? How long did it last and how did they treat it? I understand you suffered from hyperthyroidism (same as me currently), did you also experience hypothyroidism afterwards or did it just end? I know it’s a lot of questions so feel free to answer only what you are comfortable with or pm me. I have a new appointment with an endo on Friday to check again what can be done as the pain, the fever and the high heart beat continue….
No worries! I had one sided discomfort and pain in my throat for many months but couldnt work out what it was. Towards the end (before things got really bad) the inflammation around the thyroid was visible. I was told that the inflammation can cause a leakage of hormone which is why you then get acute symptoms of an overactive thyroid but your thyroid isnt actally overactive. Other symptoms included palpitatations, hot flushes and a fever (my temperture would suddenly spike but then go down fairly quickly) and insomnia (the inability to sleep was the hardest thing). I was also ravenous all the time. Insatiable apetite. All that lasted about 2 weeks. They prescribed something for the palpitations and carbizamole (which isnt safe if you are pregnant or ttc). I took that for about 3 months. I have developed a slighty underactive thyroid which i am told is common. Its within normal range but not optimum in fertility terms so i now take a low dose of thyroxine. It all caused significant delays with my fertility treatment, as they wouldnt contemplate a FET until my thyroid stabalised.
