Hi Blueberry,
I completely get your disappointment. This happened to me once. I had 13 eggs and by day 5, there were none available to freeze. Luckily for me, my following cycle was successful on the same protocol. The only difference was that I pushed for a day 3 transfer. I now have a 5 month old daughter.
As I was 43 at the time I expected a huge drop off in numbers but that was a big blow. You have one embryo so this is a chance. It is quite common for embryos to not develop between days 3 and 5. My consultant blamed the sperm so worth chatting with your consultant to find out their thoughts.
All the best 🙏🏾
Thank you for your answer. You used the same exact protocol for the cycle afterwards?
We had a retrieval last year with a very different result. We checked the sperm, with a dna frag and used a chip fertile test to select the best ones ( as we did last year). Husband has DNA fragmentation however it was described as mild and chip fertile test helps to choose the best ones.
That is why I cannot understand this.
Sorry for the late response. Yes we did the exact same protocol over 3 cycles. The other thing is my DH had one sperm retrieval surgery which was used for several IVF/ICSI cycles so when the consultant blamed the sperm I found it hard to believe.
I never got a satisfactory answer but some ladies on here told me that the nature of IVF is that it can go rogue sometimes. The main thing is to discuss your concerns with your consultant and check if anything needs tweaking. We decided to take the last 2 vials of sperm so that there was a wider selection of sperm to choose from. As you are already aware, I also insisted on a day 3 transfer instead of waiting for day 5 as I could not beat the idea of not having anything to transfer.
Worth noting that the huge drop of also carried on in my 3rd round. I had 15 eggs, retrieved, which resulted in my daughter and only 1 blast frozen.
There is an IVF saying “it only takes one egg!” Wishing you all the best 🙏🏾
Hi! I hear you. We had 18 that fertilised and on day 5 they told us we had 3 blastocysts good enough for freezing. It was a bit of a shock but they explained it was quite a normal attrition rate. The good news was that they waited until day 6 for two morulas and one blastocyst to develop further so we ended up with 6 in the freezer. All fingers crossed! In the end of the day, you only need for one to work.
As an update, they called us that three more made it to blastocysts 🙏🤞
Hi, I know how you feel, I've just had a similar experience with my first collection. I had 12 collected, 10 fertilised, 8 on day 3, then only 2 by day 5. I was really disappointed, but the clinic weren't surprised and said this is normal xx
I get this we got 19 eggs 12 fertilised only 3 embryos ! Just have to have the mantra quality mot quantity! Best of luck x
