Yeah, I don't know. Each update seems to get a bit sadder. We've got some embryos pulling through and transfer still looks set for Monday, but I was expecting for better news.
I also questioned on the day 2/3 transfer thing which some women do, and I still don't fully understand the reasoning behind only doing day 5. Sure they are better quality embryos at day 5, that I understand, but you're throwing away embryos that could have made pregnancies and babies...

Hi love, I’ve been on the receiving end of those sad updates and I’m just so sorry. I think the theory behind waiting until day 5 is that you’re more likely to have success with embryos that have survived to that stage. But conversely, there’s a school of thought (and some research) that some ppl with recurrent poor embryo quality might be better off with earlier embryo transfers, as at least then the embryos get put back into a natural environment. My clinic does day 2/3 transfers and I will definitely push for that if I have a repeat of poor embryo quality next time around.
Sending love and sympathy...and hoping those few embryos are fighters ❤️
Yeah, I definitely understand that day 5s have more chance at success, but it's hard to let go of embryos that have any chance! Going with day 5 as I trust the embryologists at the clinic (so far) but it's still upsetting.
Hey, sorry to hear you havent had the best news today. I think if there are more than 2 embryos the clinic prefers to take them to day 5 in order to pick out the strongest ones. The theory is that if they cant make it to day 5 then they are less likely to produce a pregnancy. It is heart breaking as we have in the past had to discard embryos but in fairness they werent looking that great on day 3. Good luck for Monday.xx
Massive hugs to you! This is so hard 😔 If they are set on Monday, it must mean they are convinced you will have a good quality blastocyst for transfer, is that what they told you? My clinic either does either day 3 or 5, I'm still waiting to hear, but if all 3 of mine are strong I might still do a Monday transfer. If mine are looking worse quality or I'm down to 1 maybe 2 then I will probably do my transfer tomorrow. That's how they explained it to me anyway.
Wishing all your little ones the best over the next few days!! xxxx
They are convinced I will have a good quality blastocyst for transfer. And they said I could do day 3 transfer if I felt strongly about it, but it's not what they'd recommend. I'm not going to go against what they recommend at this stage. I just feel like I'd rather have the chance with half a dozen average embryos AND a blastocyst rather than get rid of everything that's not a blastocyst if that makes sense?
Hi Emmie, these are really stressful days, I know. Unfortunately day 2 or 3 transfer success rates are very poor (and I know first hand as I had one!), cells aren’t dividing quickly enough meaning there’s some sort of DNA issue- and the ‘mass of cells’ cannot be considered an embryo- as it doesn’t have a nucleo and material needed to implant. Therefore, clinics choose to discard based on that. And I understand it’s very frustrating, but I remember the hope I was given when I had my two days transfer and if I could go back I would definitely save myself from that pain.
I mean, reasons for embryo failing are multiple but if you start with a damaged one they are even less, don’t you think?
And even top quality embryos can have issues (and mine did because it failed!), but from a scientific point of view are much more advanced. I understand this now.
Also, transferring poor quality ‘mass of cells’ is also a waste of time, from a practical point of view? You would waste a cycle.
Just trying to make you see the ‘practical’ point of view, emotionally it’s all a different story - but we got to trust the experts.
I’m keeping everything crossed for you! 🍀🤞🏻🍀🤞🏻🍀🤞🏻🍀🤞🏻🍀🤞🏻🍀🤞🏻🍀🤞🏻🍀🤞🏻
Thanks for reminding me that day 2/3 transfer rates are poor. It's just hard accepting discarding embryos when there's a chance they may be babies, no matter how small! I did say to the embryologist that I definitely trust them, but it is hard emotionally as people do get pregnant from these transfers and these embryo numbers are finite so it seems crazy to discard one with say a 1% chance when there might not be anything to replace it and so would have a 0% chance. Does that make sense?
3 are good/great, 1 is not doing well at all. They'll see with the other 3. I just thought we'd have like double the amount this round as I egg shared last time I was with this clinic and got 6 fertilised eggs (& shared 6) and got 2 day 5 blastocysts.
But we only got 7 fertilised eggs out of 11 eggs this round, so our numbers started from a lower place yesterday already.
Ok let’s work with 6 since 1 is not doing well. Statistics say that a 60% of the fertilised get to day 5- which in this case is 3.6- so you could have either 3 or 4 embryos. I’m thinking the 3 good/great will all pull through, and out of the other 3 even if you got only 1 it would be good - 4 is a great number! What do you think xx
I would LOVE 4! If I got 4 I would be ecstatic. Really, I would!
I'm not wanting millions or anything like that! Hoping for 3 at this stage, but I'm just worried it will be back to 2 like my other cycles and then all those extra eggs (and extra meds) will have been for nothing.... I know, I know there's nothing wrong with 2. I just had very high hopes for this round, so it's a bit difficult with any bumps as clearly it is throwing me in a to a tizz! Very high hopes for this round (everyone probably say that on every round!). 4 would be amazing. If 4 make it to day 5 I will "eat my hat" (is that the phrase?) and apologise to everyone for being such a whiny cow.
Just wanted to add, my last cycle I had 7 fertilise, by today I had 3 doing well and 1 lagging behind. All 3 of the ones doing well made it to day 5 and were good enough to freeze. Obviously the first one is doing quite well!
So you still have every chance for a good day 5 outcome. Just wanted to add a little hope to your day 😘♥️ xxx
Sorry to hear it wasnt better news for you. I do get the whole day 5 thing, as the way it was explained to us what that a day 5 embryo will have a higher success of pregnancy, and if they transfer on day 3 it might be putting you through the 2ww and the torture for no reason. On the other hand we nearly chose a clinic that did day 5 transfer only, and we thought we cant risk it as we have never had any embryos that make it to this stage, and there was a time ...back in the day...when they only did day 2 or 3, so there has got to me some chance in those days too!
We can only trust what the experts say and sending you lots of positive vibes for over the weekend ready for transfer Monday, lots of love xxx
That's true on the 2ww torture. Who would want to go through that if they didn't have to?! They have said I can have transfer tomorrow (day 3) if I feel strongly about it, but I don't feel strongly about it enough at this time and would definitely prefer to trust the experts at this stage! x
Hey lovely, sorry to hear it wasn't the call you were hoping for.
At my clinic if they have 3 or less they will do a day 2 or 3 transfer (and at my age they normally put them all back). Not sure if thats any help but definitely worth pursuing if thats the sort of number you are dealing with
Just to reassure you it is quite common for numbers to drop off. In my rounds I have had the following
3 collected, 2 fertilised - transfer day 2
13 collected, 7 fertilised, 5 left on day 3, 3 left on day 5
Thanks Daisy. That's helpful. I've only had two fresh rounds previously:
12 collected, 6 shared (egg sharing) so 6 for me, all 6 fertilised and all 6 still fine at this stage of the round, but 2 left on day 5
6 collected, 5 fertilised with 2 left on day 5
So with 11 collected this time (only 7 fertilised though) I thought we'd be in a better position this round!
Only having 2 left at day 5 each of the previous rounds I thought wasn't great numbers and it worries me that we've been discarding two thirds of the embryos when there's not loads to begin with. They're just very precious.
Hoping you get more than one by Monday so you can have a spare 😘 it is what it is, 🤷🏼♀️😘......if they’ve said you are all set for Monday transfer then happy days 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 I’ve never read of anyone getting 20 eggs 20 embryos to 5 day , so I guess your results look normal for a good round to me 🤷🏼♀️😘😘😘😘
We alwaaaaaaays want more. I’m just wishing you get a chance this round as many many ladies are out from day of fertilisation . Count each little blessing as it comes 😘
One will be amazing and anything extra .... a bonus 😘😘😘😘🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Huge hugs pet, you’re doing great! Hope you are resting the ass off yourself on the sofa with a blanket and slave boy ( husband ) is serving ya 💃🏼 🍇 🤪
It is what it is. Thanks, Rhinocat. Think I'm just emotional anyway from..... not sure what. Everything! Glad my numbers look normal. I doooooooooo want more! You're right we always want more. It's like my salary. It can never be enough!!!
Yup, just need to get to transfer. That's the most important. Anything else is a bonus. And I'm expecting to get to transfer, so I should be happy about that. Just having a wobble, you know.
I'm at work today btw!! I know you can't tell with how much I am on this forum! Lol.
I had 6 eggs to start with. Everyone on here was very positive about that. Then 5 were mature. 4 survived the blastocyst. We got one A and a C that’s in the freezer. The other two they left until day 6 and then phoned to say they hadn’t developed.
Let’s hope you get that one good one that’s waiting for it’s home. Like mine was x
I 100% agree with you Emmie. It’s so difficult isn’t it - pushing them onto day 5 but then loosing some because of pushing them on. Makes you wonder if they’d been put back in sooner whether they’d have had a better chance & then you could have frozen those that did make it to day 5 🤷♀️ There are so many difficult choices in this blasted process, and we will never know if we made the right ones(s) unless we end up with our 🌈🤱
It’s great that you have some that are still pulling through though..sounds like more than one which is really positive!
I have EVERYTHING crossed for you for Monday! 🤞🏻🍀🤞🏻🍀🤞🏻 Xxx
This is exactly it! My husband and the embryologists think I'm nuts for considering transferring sooner and freezing day 5 ones!! Anyway I'm trusting the clinic on this round and going with a day 5 transfer but it will be something I do more research in to if this round fails. (Not expecting this round to fail though!) Xx
Ah Emmie, sorry to hear you’re having a tough time but reading all the posts I can see some fab advice which has obviously helped 😊 you’re always so so supportive to everyone else, just know everyone is rooting for you and your embryos, I’m sure by Monday you will have some beautiful embryos to be transferred and or some for the freezer too on Monday 🍀🤞🙏🏻
