Has anyone flown with injections and medication?

Hey!

Just wondering if anyone has flown during a frozen transfer cycle where they needed to bring medication?

I am wondering if flying shorthall would also be a bad idea during the cycle?

I can wait and postpone for another month to avoid my holiday if so...

Just wanted to hear anyones experiences.

2ww on holiday was thinking may or may not be good.....

Hello 😘 I have to fly whilst on medication and take the medication with me as I’m doing ivf in Spain and I’m from Scotland. I’ve never had any problems. I make sure I’ve got original packaging and I usually have some bits of paper with protocols written on them. But I’ve never been asked to see anything xxx

Ok amazing - it is just a 1 hour flight within Europe so was hoping it would be simple.

Thanks so much. X

Hi! Yes I'm cabin crew and flew for a very short while whilst I was down regging. I put my needles and vial in a clear plastic liquid bag separate from my normal liquid bag and when I got to security I showed them along with the prescription of the drugs with my name on. You can request a prescription from your clinic. I didn't bother taking my sharps box as I was only away for 1 night. So I just put the lid back on the used needle and put it in my sharps box when I got home. I had no issues. Hope that helps x

Also depending on where you are going some countries have very strict regulations on drugs. So just check before you go its mainly middle east and Asia but thought I'd give you heads up! Normally ok if you have prescription but can check each country's gov website for clarification x

I have always flown with meds mid cycle (both long and short haul - even injected on flights!) and never had any issues. Ive just made a point of pointing out to the security there are needles and carried them separately to my hand luggage. You can ask your clinic for a letter that basically confirms that the drugs are approved etc. Although I have never been asked for it. I think a holiday mid cycle is actually a great idea to get you chilled and in a positive mindset. Good luck x

Ah thanks so much. Good info to get the clinic to write a note.

Yes I think it will only be the injections coming up to my transfer month if I understand correctly.

Hello Eb20,I flew last week to US with a lot of drugs and needles. I had a travel letter from the Clinic just in case, but no one questions anything, both ways.

Hope this helps xxx

Hi, have flown several times with all the medication. As doing ivf back in Poland. It was fine. If meds are mixed then is all okay. If fresh make sure they don’t need to be stored in fridge so between 2-8 degrees as first time I flew from Poland had to disregard the whole lot as was too scared to risk - and start taking them. My clinic also gave me a notification from clinic that I’m undergoing a treatment and I had separate fridge like bag so all meds and needles were there…good luck. :)

Oh didn't think about the fridge - this is a good point. I am a bit rusty as did this all 4 years ago..... thanks so much x

If you are doing a frozen cycle then you may not need a fridge which is usually only for stimulation drugs like Gonal F and the trigger injection ovitrelle. You may only need to take oestrogen and progesterone.

However, if you do need your meds to be in the fridge, check out one of my previous posts where there were lots of useful advice on keeping meds cool when travelling.

Hi, I flew to Tenerife yesterday and yesterday was also day 1 of my FET. Zero problems flying. Just make sure to take all meds in your hand luggage (I only had hand luggage) and helpfully liquid medication is not counted in your liquids allowance (nor does it have to be under 100ml). When I go through security I always have my injections in a little metal box (which I then use to bring the used needles back in) and take the metal box out, like I would for liquids. Not once been asked about them. I’ve also flown with cool bags. Was asked about that but with a copy of my treatment plan and letter from clinic re carrying drugs, they barely looked at it and ushered me through.

My view is we don’t do/delay sooo many things for IVF. We need to live our lives and manage the treatment around holidays and fun activities otherwise it’s all absorbing.

Good luck and enjoy your break!

Yes that's what I feel - just want to get on with it and we have a holiday booked xxx

We flew three days after transfer (to Sri Lanka). You just need to get a letter from your clinic for the airlines for the drugs (including needles). Like you we thought better to be on two week holiday during the wait. We were rewarded with a lovely holiday, a BFP and I’m now 17 weeks. Just keep away from Zika risk countries xx

I did regularly, its no bother at all. I put my meds in my hand luggage ans pointed it out to staff and everyone just shrugged and said that's fine. I did also have a letter from my clinic but nobody wanted to look at it.xx

Thanks so much - seems like everyone has a similar experience so I am much more relaxed now.

Imagine how many women do IVF all over the world - it must happen a lot!
