Progesterone with natural pregnancy?? (after 2 failed IVF rounds)

Hi all, I’m in the early stages of a natural pregnancy after 2 failed IVF rounds (1 BFN, 1 BFP chemical). Before IVF I had 2 miscarriages and then a tube removed).

When i spoke to my clinic today, I asked if I should take progesterone to help the pregnancy. They said as it’s natural it’s likely not needed… but the nurse then said that if I wanted to take it it wouldn’t hurt.

I feel a bit divided as I’m desperate for this to work and don’t want to do anything that would mess things up… at the same time if it would help then I’ll try anything!! And the guidance from the clinic just wasn’t that clear? Has anyone had anything similar? 💜💜

Hi x I’m trying naturally before my next FET. My miscarriage unit have advised I take cyclogest around time of ovulation until pregnancy test, if by some miracle pregnant to continue with it . So I’m guessing it can’t do any harm ?

I am doing exactly the same pre my frozen transfer....

Hi Lolalules, I had a natural conception earlier this year and I took cyclogest progesterone to support it. It doesn’t do any harm was my basic rationale. And my consultant did subsequently ok it all. I got my progesterone tested twice early on as well (after I started taking cyclogest) and the results showed I was at the right levels whilst I was taking it.

Hi, thanks so much for the feedback. My concern is now that I’m already just over four weeks so will it make a difference… or disrupt things? Also, how did you get the progesterone tested? Was it with your GP? Thanks so much 🙏💛

I had my progesterone levels tested by my ivf clinic. My GP historically won’t do anything for me if it’s related to fertility beyond the initial basic tests. It doesn’t hurt to ask your GP as all are different, I just don’t anymore as I’m sick of fighting to get assistance from them. I find it less stressful to pay for the test myself.

I was told by my clinic before starting ivf that if we fell pregnant naturally before treatment to come and to take progesterone to support the pregnancy just in case. In fact the doctor gave me prescription straight away.

That’s good to know, thank you. I do have some at home so maybe I’ll start taking some tonight

Hello, I had the same - natural pregnancy after 2 failed ivf rounds. The clinic suggested I take any cyclogest that I had from previous cycles - I had enough leftover to last 4 weeks (twice a day) so I did that. It gave me peace of mind to take the cyclogest but up to you as I didn’t pay additionally for any but just used up what I had. Congrats on your pregnancy - hope it’s been easy on you so far xx

Congratulations! NICE changed its guidance recently to say women with certain miscarriage risks or bleeding should be offered progesterone up to 16weeks. Was from first scan showing heartbeat which they said was normally around 5 weeks onwards rather than from pregnancy test, but it could be earlier. Recommendation was for vaginal pessaries but so many women use cyclogest rectally and seem to be ok. Maybe Google the guidance (and evidence review if interested) and speak to your clinic and GP. I had bleeding when I stopped taking progesterone around 10 weeks and my consultant put me back on it and said couldn't have too much/couldn't hurt - it was after a FET but I think the principle would be the same on a natural pregnancy. Personally I think progesterone has always been my problem trying naturally and the reason for two early losses on fresh transfers, so I would definitely take it again.

It may vary by clinic but when I got pregnant naturally between IVF cycles my IVF clinic wouldn't prescribe me any and said I needed to speak to my GP, and my GP wouldn't prescribe any until I had had a scan at around 6 weeks because they wouldn't give it unless its been proven not to be an ectopic. So if you have some left over I would take it. I ended up self prescribing! Good luck xx

Thanks!! Yes i have plenty at home… I spoke to the clinic today who basically said for peace of mind take it because stressing about it either way isn’t helping 😆 may i ask how your natural pregnancy went? Im just over 4 weeks and I’m SO petrified it’s going to end soon
