33yo. Unexplained.

Hi all,

I had my 2. Egg retrieval last week with the result listed :

26 retrieved - 18 mature - 12 day3 embroyos - 2 blastocysts (and now they are frozen)

From the first one ivf cycle we had 1 frozen and we had fresh embryo transfer with 2 embryos which ended up miscarriage.

This cycle, we had so much eggs, and we believed that will result with so much embryos but in the end from 12 day3 embryos only 2 have reached to blastocyst level and frozen.

We are kind a disappointed and scared at this moment since we always have been told that we don’t have any health issue we are very Healty people on the paper even before we started ivf but this results don’t seem to be normal to be , am I being silly to think that there is something wrong ?! :(

I am extremely grateful for our 2 beautiful embryos but with this result what are the chance for them to grow and lead to normal pregnancy ?

I know quality over quantity.. but still can’t believe from our 12 day3 embryos only 2 reAch to blastocysts stage :(

P.S

Our first cycle ivf was ended up 19 collected - 14 fertilized - 9 day3 embryos - 3 blastocysts.

Also for 2. Round of ivf our doctor used less drugs but we ended up with more eggs…

We haven’t talked with our doctor yet but

Any similar experience ?

Thanks,

Sophie !

A large drop off between days 3 and 5 can be due to sperm quality-have you looked into sperm DNA fragmentation? Probably worth ruling it out. Hopefully the ones you have left will be successful and you don’t need it! Xx

Sperm analysis included DNA fregmaentations are all good 🙏🏻 All our test including recurrent pregnancy losses tests are all good… They told me that first 3 days embryos grow with Mather dna, later on they start growing with their own. So not sure what is wrong..

Nothing wrong. This is your time now. Stay positive. You are healthy, you have the blastocyst so keep positive, it is your time that just came. Just relax mom🤱🏻❤️

Sadly we had the same ….. 4 egg collections - between 15-22 eggs collected each time, each time 12-14 embryos still going strong on day 4, then only 2 make it to day 5 blast….. its heartbreaking, but we do have a healthy baby boy from one of them! So it can still work 💪🤞 (we’re now trying for a sibling).

Ahh ! I hope one of our embryos strong enaugh like your boy ❤️ 💐🙏🏻🙏🏻 Did doctor explain anything about that drop ? I know each case is different but, I am still waiting to talk with my doctor meantime trying to adjust my head around 🥲

Not really, same as you, all tests came back normal, they said its genetic lottery with the embryos and there’s not much we can do apart from start looking at donors. We’re not quite there yet - we have one more frozen, if that doesn’t work we’ll have a think about what to do next 🍀🤞

Good luck to you ! 💫 x

Good luck to you too! ❤️ I think I will see what we can do next when the doctor gives me more explanation. We'll keep trying and hope that one of the frozen embryos is healthy enough for a beautiful baby! 🙏

Hey, i've had similar to you. Large starting numbers, but only 2-3 blasts. On my first round I was successful and have a beautiful 10 month old now. It could be that the poor embryos have got weeded out early and you only have the stronger ones from the cycle that one will make it left...It is odd that you got more eggs with less drugs. I'd be interested to know what your consultant says to that?! Maybe it's just random cycle variation?

Maybe ask your consultant if you may have undiagnosed polycystic type ovaries (rather than PCOS)...?

You've every chance. Good luck🤞xx

Thank you ! Hopefully we ll have our consultation once I have my period to start FET. I will definitely ask for PCOS kind a situation. And hope we have healty ones left 🙏🏻 I hope health to your beautiful boy ❤️

I think it’s a misconception that you’ll get half a dozen blastocysts from a cycle. The reality is that most of the time the clinics are aiming to get you one to do a fresh transfer and then maybe one to freeze as a back up. They don’t correct the misconception because honestly would we pay £10k a time to gamble on one blastocyst? That’s why the NHS recommends 3 cycles as if the average success rate is 30% per cycle (under age 35) so 3 cycles each yielding 1 blastocyst gets you a 90% chance of success My doctor was very honest - refreshingly so - that most women are actually only capable of making 1-2 quality blastocysts per cycle - our bodies just aren’t designed to make much more even with loads of drugs to effectively fight nature /biology

Thank you for your comment, you are right. I think, when I watched youtube videos like ''IVF success - 8 embryos frozen'', I started hoping that we would have the same result with 26 eggs... The doctors told us we are healthy so we have a high chance of IVF but it is a very personal journey.. Meantime, our embryologist told me that it really depends on round to round. in one round we might have more high-quality eggs and sperms which leads to more healthy embryos but the same couple could have a different result with different rounds. It is a roller coaster... one day I am hopeful another day I am down and questioning what is wrong with us... I just want to hope that, we have the right embryos with us 🙏

Hi Yes nature variation can often dictate the variation in egg numbers and quality and quantity outside the levels of drugs given. I was given fairly high drugs I was 35 at the time l they collected 20 eggs , 14 day 3 embryos and 8 blasts frozen BUT many were low grade bc so in effect many are probably no good. I did go on to have success with that round. Remember those two blasts have as much chance as resulting in a baby( babies) they have already proven they can go the distance out of the eggs you started with an that in itself is very positive . Believe they are the ones 🤞 x

Thank you for your message. 🙏🏻🙏🏻 I have panicked and concentrated too much on numbers but now I am realising I have 3 beautiful chance to have baby ❤️🧡🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

You’ve absolutely hit the nail on the head with this, it’s made also feel really reassured you’ve explained the odds ratio brilliantly. Thank you x

I had 27 eggs collected, 13 matured, 9 fertilised and 4 day 5 blastocysts and 1 day 6. Out of those out two highest grades one gave a bfp but ended in miscarriage, the other didn’t work, our third and fourth are currently sat feeding from me. One was a higher graded embryo and one was our lowest - you’d never know 🥰 good luck !

I know how you feel but I want to give you hope!I did 4 fresh cycles, 6 transfers. (and 2 cancelled cycles before egg retrival)

Each cycle we would get loads of eggs around 12 mature and then only 3 or 4 would fertilize and reach day 3...

My doctor always did 3rd day transfers and I now have a daughter 2.5 years old, currently 36 weeks pregnant.

So really numbers doesn't matter and your numbers compared to my case are amaaaazing.

Hope you get pregnant soon!

Oh and we have severe male infertility factor... My eggs are excellent quality but husband's sperm is soooooooo bad that's why it of 12 eggs we can only get 3 or 4 to fertilize via ICSI
