Gastroenteritis and starting ivf soon

Hi all,

I’ve had diarrhoea and vomiting last 2 days with a lot of stomach gurgling.

My husband also had it 3 days ago. I think it’s either food poisoning as we had oysters on bank holiday Monday at the sea-side . My symptoms only started on Thursday though with gurgling, then on Saturday I had vomiting eight times and diarrhoea. This morning I still have runny poop.

I’m worried as I’m starting IVF in about ten days and I’m scared this is going to have a negative impact on my chances of producing healthy blastocysts. My anxiety comes from an article I read:

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

These 2 women did not get to blastocyst stage when they had a tummy bug during their cycle.

So I guess my question is are there any women out there who have had food poisoning/ Noro virus/ tummy bug prior to or during their stims and had successful pregnancy?

Thank you

Hello,

My situation is a bit different, but I had Sinusitis which is classed as an infection so I thought I'd share my experience. I had a cold which started on day 1. We went ahead and started medication on day two. After that I developed Sinusitis and was sick/in bed for a week while stimming (no fever).

I was really worried about the negative impact an active immune system might have, but we've had 13 eggs Vs 14 last time, and good fertilisation rates/development so far (we're on day 3 and our fertilisation rate was 80% vs 50% last time).

We've considered delaying transfer, but the Dr has said that if I'm feeling well enough we can go ahead, so I think we're going to do that.

I would definitely advise speaking to your doctor.

The study is on a tiny pool of women, and you still have 10 days to go until you start so you might be fine by then.

A key question is whether your partner had a fever because that's very detrimental to sperm, so delaying might be a good option if so. If you feel well on day one and your Dr is happy then try not to worry.

I think, looking back I should not have started drugs when not feeling 100% on day one. I had an awful run of it, my body was struggling to both fight the infection and stim.

I felt so sick, and by the time I started getting better I was nearing egg collection. Things were not good and I had to be off sick the day before egg collection.

By comparison, my partner caught the bug the day after egg collection and only had one day of not feeling well. I think that goes to show how hard these drugs make your body work...

Think about whether you want to put yourself through it to stim earlier, or would prefer to hold off for piece of mind. For us delaying would have meant waiting until April or the summer.

I hope this helps, and I wish you all the best.

Hi hoping. I would follow clinic guidance. You may be able to continue, but if it is delayed then it will be on their best advice. Hope all goes well and if not, then delay for anothr cycle. Thinking of you. Diane

It's a difficult one; on our first round we had to have ICSI as on the day of collection my husband's sample was poor - had been great previously - even on ICSI we got less than average fertilization and then only two blasts from 9 eggs. That's not that unusual but on the next round my husband's sample was back to normal and we got 100% to blast. Our consultant said something as small as a cold a few months prior was enough to affect sperm quality and we worked out he had been ill with a bad cold around 3mnths before. I wish we'd known and delayed tbh. But then our second collection was a month/6 weeks after the first so it was a short-lived problem, and maybe you're not in that window for it to affect his sample (one thing possibly to explore is maybe getting a sample test now and/or freezing a sample?).

Then the other thing is not on stims, but just after collection, I ended up in hospital on a drip with a bacterial food poisoning - my clinic were ok for me to do a fresh transfer once I'd recovered around a week later and provided I certified I was fit, but looking back I was not ready for it and although I got a BFP, it wasn't strong and ended before 6 weeks - may have been totally unrelated as I'd had the same thing on the previous fresh transfer when I was fine, but I think I was much more unwell because of the IVF meds and I will always wonder if I had waited until I was definitely better, would the outcome have been different. I got pregnant on my first FET the following month so my body did recover quickly and no lasting effects, so best to check with your clinic re both you and your partner and see if you feel completely better by the time you start meds.
