Last week we got our BFP and my wife’s hcg had a strong number, second hcg check also great number, and yesterday had another one (also great) and we had our 5 week scan where the doctor said he saw the yolk sack and the gestational sack and everything looked great.
Today my wife started spotting some pinkish and one or two small brown spots. After like an hour or two she felt a bigger downflow and when she wiped there was quite a bit of dark red blood. More so than you would call “spotting”. That was around 3PM today. It is now almost 9PM and we’ve been checking every hour or so and although there hasn’t been anymore big bleeds there’s definitely a some pink and reddish stains when she wipes.
We’re freaking out. Has anybody had bleeding that would be more than spotting and everything turned out fine? 😔

Bleeding during pregnancy is stressful! But yes, it can be quite normal. My wife had this around the same time with our now 2 year old; it was a Subchorionic hematoma and went away on its own. There are also other reasons that don’t affect baby. I’d say if you want to, see if you can get another scan to ease your minds. Best of luck on your pregnancy journey!
Hi GBB, I had bleeding/spotting with both of my bfp about 5/6 weeks. Unfortunately the first was a chemical pregnancy but the bleeding got steadily worse it didn't go back to spotting. The 2nd mixture of red and brown and it went away after 5 days and I'm currently 27 weeks.
I don't want to worry you with the first story, alot of women on here have bleeding and everything is fine. Its positive that she had good blood results. Can she go in for another scan? I had one 6 weeks 5 days and they were able to detect a heartbeat. Sometimes it's too early but having another scan booked in might help with the anxiety.
Hi thank you for your input. We’re trying to get an appointment this week. Doctor says he can see us Wednesday but would rather see us Friday because he says Friday he should be able to hear heartbeat if everything is ok.
It’s been 48 hours since this happened and thankfully it has not gotten worse. The worst of it was Saturday afternoon but ever since then she’s just been lightly spotting a pinkish discharge/blood when she wipes. Not heavy at all. We don’t know what the heck is going on but we’re hoping for the best.
Yes my bleed was at 6 weeks and after 2-3 days of significant amounts, reduced and lasted a week.Of course we freaked out, got a scan and we’re lucky to hear his heartbeat. The bleeding was from an area in the uterus separate to the placenta so had no effect on the little one. I have found this is very common in ivf and natural pregnancies after asking around.
Get checked asap to put your mind at ease - but know it’s not definitely the worst.
We were incredibly lucky and after a 10 month pregnancy now have sleepless nights because our little boy now terrorises us in other ways.
Wishing you lots of strength, luck and calm during this time. It’s so hard to keep your head. Good luck 🤞
Hi GBB. Brown blood is old blood, so hopefully it is slowing down. Could be due to irritation of the cervix from any prescribed progesterone pessaries. She could try using them rectally for a few days, if she is still using them to give her "front" a rest. Make sure she drinks plenty of water in case she might be developing a urine infection. Speak to GP if it continues. Good luck! Diane
Hi thanks for your input. She’s not taking pessaries as her progesterone has been prescribed in oil form and she gets it as an intramuscular injection daily. She had a baginal ultrasound the day before and a doctor we spoke to says that the cervix is very sensitive in early pregnancy and that may be the cause of the bleed.
It’s been 48 hours since this happened and thankfully it has not gotten worse, but all of yesterday and today she’s been spotting lightly a pinkish discharge/blood when she wipes. We’re hoping everything is ok.
Hi. Just keep an eye out for any infection. Could just be an inflamed cervix which should settle on its own. Not too long to scan which will reassure you. Diane
I just want to wish you good luck. I’m 31 weeks with ivf twins and I bled from week 5-week 10 on and off and heavily a couple of times. It’s very scary but can be harmless. Fingers crossed all is ok for you
