**sensitive post** First scan after being discharged from clinic

Hi ladies, hoping for your advice. We were lucky enough to get a BFP on our most recent round of ICSI and as of today I’m 8+2. I went for my viability scan this morning and everything is looking ok 🙏🏻 So I’ve been discharged from my clinic. I was told to call the midwifes to make my first appointment and scan with them, which I expected to be at 12 weeks, but the date I’ve been given is September, by which point I’ll be 13+5. It seems really late, but I wondered if that was normal for IVF patients since we’ve had the viability scan already. Does anyone have any experience of this, should I ask for it to be sooner? I’m in Scotland. Thanks in advance!

Hello. Congrats! Exciting times :) I don’t think it has anything to do with IVF, I think the NHS are just busy so they schedule when they can and sometimes it’s a week or two after the precise 12 week mark…. I’ve heard a few other ladies who had the same. I don’t think it’s an issue, you’re still in time for any amnio you might need etc…. but if you’re worried you can always ask if they can bring it forward by a few days….?

Have you considered a Harmony blood test? Even though the NHS doesnt cover those I don’t think, so you’d have to pay privately. xx

Thanks for your reply. It’s good to know it’s not too unusual… just always hear of others getting 12 week scans so I wondered. I think I’ll just see how I go and try and hold out. I have an appt with the midwife before then so I can speak to her about it too. I hadn’t heard of Harmony blood tests but will look into it, thank you! X

Great that you’ll get to talk to the midwife :) Harmony blood tests test for abnormalities in the foetus , using only your blood - they’re really reliable, and you can do them from 11 weeks I think. I did one before my 12 week scan, so that when the scans came back high risk (which I thought they would because of my age) I already knew baby was ok. They’re quite pricey (about £500), but personally I think they’re worth it xx

Congratulations!! You can definitely ask for an early scan but 13 weeks is not that late for nuchal scan. I know that first weeks of pregnancy we would like to have every day scans 😂 just for our reassurance. Take care of yourself 🤗💕

Thank you for the reassurance! I think I was just expecting a date in August so when I heard September it seemed late. Hopefully all will go smoothly until then. 🙏🏻 X

Congrats to you! I think yes always ask. All the way through your pregnancy, if you have a question no matter how trivial it might sound always ask. Explain to your midwife that you would like an earlier scan but it might just be booked up. Harmony test is a good option or you could go for a private scan (£100 - £150) just to give you the reassurance you need. Xx

Thank you, I’ll definitely speak to the midwife when I see her in a few weeks. Good suggestion re a private scan too, I’ll consider that as well! So much great advice on here xx

Congratulations!Your “12 week scan” can be performed anywhere between 11 and 14 weeks I think as this is the time window for them to get the NT measurements they need for the screening.

I had mine on Monday at 13 weeks, so it’s not always that early, there’s just a bit more to see if it’s a little bit later

Congratulations! I think they are just busy and some people are getting them a week or so after the 12 weeks. If you are anywhere near Glasgow I would recommend bump to baby private scan I had this at 10 weeks (and quite a few other times during pregnancy) to reassure me and the lady in there is great 😊 it’s about £50. I know there are others too similarly priced across the country. It was defo a god send for us and less ‘clinical’ than the one the hospital do xx

I think I will definitely do that- I’m in Glasgow so easy enough to get a private scan. Thanks for the recommendation. It’s just one wait after another isn’t it and I’m not sure I can hold out all the way to September! Xx

I was the exact same! You can take 2 people in as well so my mum got to come in at the 16 week one we went for (I couldn’t wait between the 12 and 20 week either 🙈) wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy xx

Yeah I think the nhs timescale is normal enough. Mine will be at 12 weeks only because my gp requested it was earlier rather than later considering everything I’ve been through 😘💐

That’s good to know. I’ve been following your journey and so pleased for you, hope everything continues to go well! Xx

Hello and congratulations :) My timing is very similar to yours, I had my scan at 8w 3d, and then was booked in for 13w 3d, so I think your timing is absolutely fine. But like you, I felt that was a very long time to wait, I called the clinic and explained that I was an IVF pregnancy and would appreciate any earlier appointment that came up, they were able to book me in for 12w 3d, hopefully you might be able to do the same. Good luck with it XX

Hi Ginny, thanks for replying! Congrats on your pregnancy too. That’s a good suggestion, I will speak to the midwife about it in a few weeks and if they can’t bring it forward I think I’ll go for a private scan. Xx

The same thing happened to me. I am struggling in this long wait for another scan. hang in there. Now is a process of waiting and waiting. My appt is going to be at 12w 3d. Cant wait!

Congrats on your pregnancy, I hope you can last the wait! So much waiting isn’t it! Hope it all goes smoothly for you xx

Thank you and hope all goes well for you too. The waiting part is hard. But we don't have other choice other than wait and wait.
