Miscarriage Management Options

I’m stuck in a really frustrating limbo of knowing that my pregnancy is not progressing (empty sac and bHCG not rising much) and not being able to have any intervention for another week.

Another week feels like a lifetime. I’m just hoping my body does it thing naturally before that.

I have two questions

1) is there anything I can do to encourage my body to expel the pregnancy tissue?

2) if I do choose medical management or surgical intervention is the recovery time longer?

Basically I want this out of me and to be able to look forward to and plan next FET.

Thanks for reading.

I had medical management for my miscarriage last week. I opted for that as I would have had to wait for surgery.

The medical management took about 9 hours in total with a couple of days of heavy bleeding after. If you have a morning appointment you can take the tablets and pass it that day so hopefully you can get it sorted at that next appointment.

No idea on naturally speeding things up, my guess would be there isn’t as I know people who have waited a really long time and things still didn’t come away.

Sorry for your loss, sending love xxx

Sorry just seen as well, the recovery time from surgery would defo be longer if you had a general anni than medical management. You’d need to be in for the whole day, nil by mouth, operated on and then recover. You can have a local anni where recovery time would be shorter.

Thanks for replying and sorry to hear you have had to go through similar.

I’ve been offered either medical management on Friday or surgical on Monday. I guess, I just want which ever option is going to allow me to get moving with another FET cycle.

I probably need to ring my clinic and talk things through, but I just can’t face it today.

They will talk you through it all. I would assume that the sooner you pass it, the sooner your body will start getting back to normal and therefore your natural cycle will return which is when I think you can start an FET. I am asking my consultant tomorrow about time scales when I can start again so can let you know if that’s helpful xx

Thank you. I’ve just got off the phone to the Gynae Unit and hopefully they will get things going on Friday for me.It sounds daft, but I really don’t want to have to take more time off work and this way, I’m in for a crappy weekend, but can hopefully get back to some sort of normality next week.

I’m going to ring my clinic tomorrow and check that they think this is the best option.x

Hey, I’m sorry you’re going through this.

I’ve had surgical management twice and it has its benefits and drawbacks.

You don’t bleed or see any tissue so emotionally for me it was easier.

My second miscarriage, the surgical management wasn’t complete and I had to have a further d+c after developing an infection. Also, with repeated d+c you can get scarring in the uterus which can hinder implantation later on.

Generally I got a period 28-30days after the management and then you can start treatment with the following period.

I was due to have a D&C following my missed miscarriage, and ended up passing most of my pregnancy the same morning I was scheduled for the D&C. I still went ahead with the D&C as they wanted to make sure my miscarriage was “complete”. Miscarrying naturally I found really painful and traumatic, you’re never really told what to expect so I think I was in a bit of shock too. With the D&C, it was over very quickly and the physical recovery wasn’t bad after. I bled for a few days but felt okay and my cycles gradually returned back into a pattern four weeks later.

With my latest CP, I was told I had to give my body a couple of months rest by my current clinic but speaking to a new clinic they didn’t seem too concerned with waiting that long so long as my cycles had returned.

So sorry you’re in this situation xx

The best way is the natural way, medical intervention is invasive as I can imagine you’ve gone through enough already.

For me, my hcg took a while to drop but when it did it was like a very heavy period.

Sorry to hear you’re going through what I went through, it’s tough - but you will get through it.

X

Hey, so sorry to hear you are going through this.

When it happened to me, I chose surgical management. I couldnt face the thought of passing it naturally and going through the pain, obviously I was already in a lot of emotional distress.

There are risks with either way but for me surgical was the right thing to do. After the 2nd scan where the empty sac/blighted ovum was confirmed, I was booked in for 3 days later and felt relief then that I knew it would soon be over, so to speak. All went smoothly, spent the day on the ward, was very nervous but a lovely anaesthetist put me at ease, had a GA and was home by about 5pm. I had no bleeeing and little discomfort and got my period exactly 6 weeks later.

I found the Tommy's website helpful for advice around options and emotional support xx

I had a manual vacuum aspiration Mva which is like a d&c but your awake so no general so once it’s done you can leave within 1/2 hr bleeding is minimal compared to natural mc. I’ve had 2 natural mc aswel but one some tissue got suck which they pulled out with forceps but then suggested medical management which I put the tablets in but nothing happened i went home all was fine I had already past all the tissue and wasn’t needed. Sorry your having to go through a mc it’s not nice at all.

I would suggest you to think about how your body responds in such situations. For me, I knew that my body doesn’t reduce the hcg levels quick and so I went in for medical management because just like you I wanted my body to be ready for the frozen cycle at the earliest. With medical management, the bleed started off very light and got heavier later on. I was also in a lot of pain when the bleed got heavier.

After that it took me 2 weeks to get a negative pregnancy test and in about 20 days, I had my first period. The second period after miscarriage was slightly delayed. Things started to normalise after that.

All the best 👍
