Hi all,
I recently had 8 eggs retrieved and 6 fertilised, at day 5 I had 2 blastocysts. I’m so grateful for the two but does anyone know what the the general reasons are why fertilised eggs don’t make it to day 5.
Thanks
Michelle

Hi. I think in the case of older woman it’s chromosomal abnormalities. Sadly anyone over 35. So after it fertilises the egg does all the work for about 3 days and there after the sperm takes over hence the multiplying of cells happen a lot faster.. both the egg and the sperm even if it looks ok physically unless tested we don’t know what’s inside ie it’s DNA. Generally, more than 50% of embryos don’t make it past day 3. I think with the eggs is makes mistakes whilst dividing and it just runs out of energy. So doesn’t develop any further.
Agree it’s normally due to chromosomal abnormalities - of both the egg and the sperm.... not sure what other factors there are but in both my IVF cycles we had massive drops in numbers - 15 eggs, 12 fertilised, 11 still going on day 4 and then day 5 down to 2 blasts..... it’s incredibly disheartening but we do have a gorgeous little boy from one of those (now trying for no 2) so you only need one warrior embryo to make it through ! 👍 x
To be honest getting 2 to day 5 is pretty “normal” unless you are in your 20s. Most clinics only really expect you to get one to transfer and if you are lucky one to freeze
My doctor said most people’s bodies just aren’t capable of making more than 2 good quality blastocysts
For me I only ever got 2 blastocysts whether I had 14 eggs or 2. But my twins are from the cycle where it was just the 2 eggs collected ....
