DHEA and hair loss

Hello,

I’ve beeb taking DHEA for 5 months now (I have low AMH) and have decided to come off it as feel my hair is thinning (which is worrying me). I just wondered if anyone else has experienced this? And when you’ve come off the DHEA, does your hair return to its normal self?

I’ve been told to gradually come off as well, so reducing my dosage weekly from 3 x 25g .. currently on 2 and will drop to 1 after a week.

Anyone experience similar, it’d be great to hear your outcome.

Thank you 🙂

I’ve just stopped after about 2 mths I’ve done dhea before for 3 mths my hair I feel it thins and goes greasy but did return to normal after. This time I’m not sure if it had thinned or I’m just being paranoid and just looks thinner when it needs dyed, its around the ears when I wear it up 🤔

Thank you for your reply. That’s good to hear that it returned to normal. I have thick hair, but have noticed I am loosing far more than normal, I malt all the time ! And it just feels thin all over .. it’s started to worry me so have decided to come off.

We’re you taking 3 daily, and did you just stop? Or stop gradually?

I just stopped both times as I was pregnant the first time and this time I just used up the last and not buying more I’ve only been off a few days. I was taking 50mg as I hadn’t had dhea level tested didn’t want to over do it.

Hi Amelia,

I have low AMH and 35 and I’m thinking of starting DHEA. I’ve read about the side effects and also the benefits. Sorry this question isn’t related to your post, I’m wondering if you’ve had your levels checked since taking DHEA? Has it improved your AMH or FSH? Has it interfered with your cycle?

Sorry to hear you’ve been struggling with the side effects.

Hello,

That’s okay I’m happy to help. I’m also 35 and have an AMH of 2.1 (FSH 10). I haven’t actually had my AMH or FSH done again and never had my DHEA level checked. A consultant recommended it to me. I’ve had two rounds of IUI since being on the DHEA and both times had two good sized follicles (the first cycle was a natural cycle too).

I’m starting my third cycle this week, have my baseline scan tomorrow and had wanted to stay on them for this, but my hair is starting to worry me.

When I first started taking them I had to start gradually as I began with two a day but had terrible upset tummy and ache. I then took it down to 1 and built up to 3 over a month period. These initial side effects disappeared and I’ve been fine, just my hair now.

I’ve also took Co-Q10 and NHP supplements.

Thanks for sharing. Were you taking 3 x 75mg and did you come off gradually or just stop?

3 x 25 so 75 daily total. I stopped straight away as part of treatment protocol.

I got a little hairier taking 2x 25mg in morning and 1x25mg. I came off it between cycles as had read don’t be on 75mg for more than 3months at a time...

Thanks for sharing. I felt this might be happening at one stage, but now I feel my hair is getting thinner. Have you had many periods of being on it for 3 months? My consultant said up to 6 months would be fine. I plan to come off it for a while now and see how this cycle goes without, I'll have the effect in me I'm sure.

My periods were fine until after my first failed cycle and I didn’t bleed for 53days! Had to take the pill to kickstart it again!! Good luck with this cycle!!x

Haha oops! I’ve taken it for 3months then 2months and am currently off it. Just been recommended by a clinic in Athens this morning to get my dhea levels checked as it could be being detrimental so going to find out where I can get that checked before I start again x

Yes I think I'll stay off it now and see how things go. Thats interesting, I have felt that I've gambled a little with taking it without knowing my own levels, but do feel like it did give things a boost.

Best of luck :) x
