Hi ladies

I will be doing another IVF but my husband has been told he needs a varicocele procedure. Has anyone partner had this done? If so did it help? Also can i go for IVF after partner gets this done.

Thanks ladies xx

Hi,

My husband needs to have this done too. We were given the choice of whether we’d like to do a round of IVF before as it would be a three month wait after the procedure. We decided to go ahead with our first round before he has the procedure as a combination of their advice and the medical research on the subject shows there is very little chance of us ending up with a pregnancy as a result of the procedure. We’re now due to start our first round end of August.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do. X

Hi. My husband had this and had an embolization last September. It was successful in the sense that it significantly improved his sperm parameters (count went from 0.8 mil to 24 mil in 3 months). We have discovered will still need IVF/ICSI though for other reasons but it can definitely improve things.

Hi MrsBlu sorry I am so dumb but what does embolization mean? so his count went up quite alot. But at least mpre chance of healthy sperm right? My husband semen concentration is only 0.1.

Embolization is the name of one of the treatments they do. I'm not sure exactly how it works but it's not painful and only takes half an hour or so. My husband went back to work the next day. You can probably look it up online. From what I understand, varicocele causes the temperature in the testicles to rise and the rise in temperature is not good for sperm production. Once the varicocele is sealed off, the blood is no longer pooling, the temperature doesn't rise and sperm production hopefully goes back to a normal range. I don't think it works for everyone but if you are going down the IVF route, it could make healthier sperm, even if it's not enough to get pregnant naturally?
