New to the Group - TTC for 5.5 years. Unexplained Infertility

Hello everyone,

hope you're all having a good Wednesday

I've just joined this group today :-)

I'm 32 have been TTC for 5.5 years.

At the moment I have "unexplained infertility" & my next step via NHS is the HSG test.

Am waiting for my next cycle to call to book the HSG Test. Bit frustrated as I called to book this month but they had no appointments available so having to wait another month before trying again.

How have you all found the HSG test? Was it painful?

Also feel frustrated about the "unexplained" infertility part. If I knew what was "wrong" I could at least do some research or know the reason!

Hoping to chat to you all some more :-)

I haven't had that test myself but hearing from others they have said it was uncomfortable, I think you may be able to ask for a sedative?

I'm sorry you're going through this. It's horrible not having answers. My husband and I have been ttc for almost a year and a half, which isn't obviously as long as yourself but it's frustrating in that we have two children together and didn't have any issues conceiving them so it's frustrating that now there seems to be a problem which I can't seem to fix, although I think we now know what the issue is.

I hope you get some answers soon

Hi Joanna1701! Welcome to the forum! You'll find lots of support here! Ive had the HSG and was quite nervous but it was really fine. It was all ok and then quite painful for about 2 seconds and then it was all over so was fine! Wishing u all the best with it. The frustrating waits are something we all know too well about, it's rubbish so we all empathise with u xx

Hi Joanna. I’m the same as u- unexplained etc although 34 when first referred- now 36! I did find the hsg uncomfortable. I wasn’t told to take any painkillers so went in a bit unexpecting . It’s probably the worst thing I’ve had so far but others have said they found it fine. And if it can be done with no painkillers I’m sure it will be better with some!! Good luck, take lots of deep breaths through it and be brave!

Hi Joanna1701. Just wanted to wish you well with all of your investigations and treatment when it happens. The HSG can be uncomfortable, but doesn't last long. Take a couple of paracetamol and hour before you are due to have it done, which does help. Good luck! Diane

Hi, I had the hsg test and it was fine, I was really nervous beforehand but didn't really feel anything, was just like having a smear. I took paracetamol and ibuprofen when I pulled up in the car park and then had to wait half hour so I would recommend you take some pain relief beforehand as I def think that helped. A nurse stays with you and talks to you throughout. I felt a bit bloated after but other than that was all ok. Good luck xx

Hi Joanne!

I was given two tablets to take to relax your cervix and stop your Fallopian tubes from going into spasm. It wasn’t comfortable but it wasn’t as frightening or as painful as the things I’d read.

They say having the test done increases your fertility. That was the case for me. My second cycle after having the procedure I got pregnant, unfortunately I had a miscarriage at 9 weeks but that was the first time I had gotton pregnant in 18 months of trying.

I hope it happens for you xx

Hello there. I had this test done. It was uncomfortable feeling of pressure more than pain and sort of stingy when dye went through but over very quickly. I took paracetamol 30 mins beforehand. Hoping that it will prove helpful for you. Lots of luck xx

Hi and welcome. I think most of us ladies have to have the hsg test before progressing onto ivf. It’s not very nice but it wasn’t as bad as I’d feared! And trust me, if I can do it then anyone can! Good luck, you’ll be fine xx
