***Sensitive*** do sonographers get measurements wrong??

I’m probably clutching at straws here. On Friday I had an early pregnancy scan to see what was happening with my double transferred day 6 blastocysts which are 7 weeks 2 days old. On Thursday I had mild cramping and spotting in the night and I haven't had much in the way of pregnancy symptoms. Shockingly I'm expecting twins but she said they are a lot smaller than they ought to be, measuring in at 3mm each when they should be 7mm. Both had heartbeats but they were too small for her to work out the rate of their hearts. Everything else looked normal and I'm not currently miscarrying but she did say she's more pessimistic than optimistic about our potential outcome. I was wondering whether anyone else had been in a similar position??? The only thing we can do is scan again in a week and pray for growth. She said it could still go either way but that they are "very small". I was wondering whether anyone here had experienced this and had a good outcome!? My friend had two scans the other day and on one her baby was 64mm and on the other her baby was 72mm so I know they can make mistakes but I don’t know if I should be accepting a miscarriage is on the way or whether I should maintain hope.

hi lovely there is of course a margin of error with anything so so small but I would imagine as they measured them both the odds of that statistically reduces of getting it so inaccurate twice. Was it an internal scan? Those are more accurate below 10 weeks. When baby is bigger and moving around stretching out etc the measurements can tend to be a bit off sometimes due to that but they can defo make some mistakes for sure! Can you maybe ask for a consultant to do your scan next week instead of a sonographer? Thats what I had when I had similar happen to me last year xx

I’m going to call the EPU at the hospital today as I have had no luck with the RMU. I see what you mean and it was an internal scan but she also documented that there are no cysts on my ovaries and I’ve had one that’s 3cm for years on my right ovary and my uterus is retroverted so I am kind of hoping that both have been scanned at the wrong angle. I’m going to make sure I get a scan soon with someone else and I might be clutching at straws but I refuse to believe at this point that it’s game over. I really do need to know though as I’m meant to be flying to New York next week and I can’t be doing that if I’m about to miscarry twins 😬😬😬😬

Oh defo get a second opinion then! I’m surprised they didn’t call someone else in when you were there it defo feels like something a doctor should be confirming or reviewing! Xx

If you struggle with EPU could you consider getting a private scan? I had my 7 week scan last week and all seemed ok but I've had very mild brown spotting the last two days so I've booked a private scan for £55 to save the stress of trying to go through EPU or my fertility clinic x

My first scan was a private scan. This is an option but I don’t want to get the same sonographer so I’ll see if I can find somewhere else. I am due to be scanned this week or next anyway at the EPU I just haven’t been sent an appointment x

It's definitely possible they measured incorrectly. I think my 7 week scan was a day out if I remember correctly. It would, however, be unusual for them to be many days out, but I doubt it's impossible. But, like Twiglet2 said, usually early pregnancy scans are pretty accurate because they aren't moving around. It becomes more difficult to get an accurate measurement as the pregnancy progresses as the baby will be shuffling about and throwing limbs up (it took my sonographer 3 tries to get a measurement of my baby's head because he kept putting his hands over his face and even then I'm not convinced it was accurate because it measured in the 97% centile). I think your best option is to get rescanned and see what they say. If they measure a lot bigger (and I'm hoping they do) you have your answer.

Thank you. They have diagnosed a miscarriage of both. He said one was 3mm still but no heartbeat and the other he couldn’t work out much at all so that one was more degenerated.
