Pregnancy supplements when taking high dose of folic acid for PCOS

Hi

I’m 6 weeks along after a successful 5d embryo transfer and I am wondering what to do for pregnancy supplements:

I have PCOS and take 5mg/ day of folic acid which was prescribed to me by my clinic.

Most places I look say to start pregnancy supplements but these include more folic acid and I wonder if it’s ok to take them as well as the folic acid prescription…

Any advice much appreciated

Hi so I am also prescribed 5mg folic acid & queried if it was ok to take alongside the usual pregnancy vitamins. The pharmacist said not to take them together as it’ll be too much folic acid .

I was told by my clinic you only really need to take a vitamin D supplement alongside folic acid , so that’s what I’ve been doing. x

Ah thanks so much. That’s what I thought… I have my first scan next week so will double check then but I was feeling anxious. I already take Vitamin D, B6 & B12 and vitamin C with it. I’ll keep going like this for now.

That’s good sounds like you’ve covered the essentials with those supplements. I know everything is a worry not knowing what to do for the best. Yes good idea to mention it at your scan for extra reassurance. Wishing you all the best x

Hi, I'm 26 weeks and 3 days pregnant and I've been taking elevit pregnancy multivitamin supplements and they have the folic acid in them so maybe you could stop the 5mg tablets and just take them, apparently iodine is very important which is in the pregnancy multivitamin, could you possibly ask a gp?

Thank you, I think for myself the prescription is the most important part so I have to prioritise it. With PCOS I need more folic acid and I need to supplement my vitamin D, so I just wasn’t sure if taking the normal supplements on top was a good idea, but I wouldn’t replace them as they’ll be lower doses and I’ve been told I need the higher doses.

Hi! I have PCOS and used to take Inositol to help it but once I got pregnant, I switched to regular pregnancy vitamins only. The pregnancy hormones make the ovaries dormant, so I didn't experience any PCOS symptoms at all. Might be worth double-checking with your clinic whether you still need the extra folic acid? Best wishes for an easy pregnancy!

Thank you & good idea, I'll check with them. I think when they first prescribed it they said to keep it throughout but worth double checking!
