Dental work when pregnant?

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if any of you new if you can have dental work when pregnant. I'm 21 weeks and since the begginging the midwifes have said look after your teeth and see a dentist. I didn't pay much attention and now have had tooth ache for 3 days. I queary is; if I need either a tooth removed or a filling both I think require local anasthetics. I have googled and said some dentists will treat pregnany women and some won't. I don't want to call one for advice and pay for a check up, (i don't have nhs) for them to then tell me I can have treatment. Just want to save my money for baby! But realize its important as any kind of infection wouldn't be great if it got.into your blood stream.

My grannay always said that you lose a tooth for every baby - thought it was a myth but then I got awful gum problems during pregnancy (they swelled up and bled) and then I got the most agonising tooth pain. Went to my dentist and he said pregnancy basically messes up every part of your body and teeth are no exception, and that the old saying wasn't far wrong. Turned out to be wisdom teeth that were causing me issues (never had any problems before) and he said best not to have GAs if possible, but if necessary he could prescribe pregnancy safe antibiotics and worst case they could operate but they don't like to. It went away as quickly as it came so I didn't need either but was an eye opener. If it's getting worse maybe see dentist or GP to be safe as if it's left the more likely you'll need treatment x

Thanks for this. Yes its crazy I havnt had a tooth ache for years and low and behold now I'm pregnant I have one. That would be great if I could just take some antibiotics. Ill call them, thanks xx

Hi Ivfhopeful. You can have what is necessary and antibiotics. It’s free on NHS during pregnancy and for a year afterwards. Good luck.Diane

if you have your matB1 form you will get free dental treatment on the nhs I’d say go get it sorted as soon as you can. The hormones can make your teeth and gums wobbly and it only gets worse as due date approaches. When I had my wee boy in lockdown it was nearly impossible to get a dentist and I had to do a lot of repair work afterwards that I could have avoided for sure! Nothing g worse than toothache 😢 hope it’s sorted for you soon xx

my sister had a filling in pregnancy and all was fine - I think it’s common 😊

I had a filling done whilst pregnant and chose not to use an anaesthetic. The dentist did reassure me though that they had one which was suitable for pregnant women. If I were you, I'd get on top of the infection, have it linger is not good for you or baby. Good luck!
