It's twins, but...

I went for my scan yesterday at 7 weeks 4 days after a single FET in early August (5 day 3bc embryo).

While the consultant was scanning, I could tell by her face there was a bombshell coming. She saw two embryos, which was a huge surprise and I was not expecting that at all. (I'm still in shock about this to be honest). But then she went on to say that the two embryos were sharing the same amniotic sac. So I asked if that was normal, and apparently it's not. It's very rare even for twin pregnancies.

It was lovely to see my babies on screen and hear their heartbeats, but now I'm super anxious after reading on Dr Google that this will be a high-risk pregnancy with potential complications as the twins will share a placenta. I called the midwife at my local hospital in the afternoon to get booked in and I have my first appointment next week.

The anxiety and rollercoaster never stops...

Has anyone else experienced this? A little apprehensive about a twin pregnancy too as I'm quite petite but will try and take one day at a time.

So did they say they couldn’t see a membrane? And they are monochorionic-monoamniotic twins? At our 7 week san we were told this but to go back a week later as it could be too early to tell? Went back at 8 weeks and still the same. 10 week scan they could now see a membrane. If this is the same with you, it could still be too early to see the membrane or not.

We had 2 embryos transferred but only 1 stuck but had split. So we were more surprised that this had happened and are identical.

Hi Runnergirl,

Thanks so much for your reply. It's reassuring to hear your story and so glad you could see a membrane by your 10 week scan :) . The consultant said they're sharing the same sac (she really didn't go into any detail which is why I googled after the scan). I've been discharged from my clinic now and was advised to contact local midwife team so NHS will take over now. I explained to the NHS midwife about the single sac and two embryos, so hopefully I'll get some regular checks to see how the pregnancy is progressing.

All the best with the rest of your pregnancy x

Yes it does sound the same when I had my first scan, I was told it was very rare. I told my midwife straight away and was referred to Fetal Medicine and obstetrics. All the best x
