Pelvic pain

I have what I think is pelvic girdle pain and I’m 26 weeks. I’ve been having on and off pain during the night radiating from the middle of my buttocks to down my leg especially at the knees. Pillows haven’t help when this has locked in and this has been going on for weeks. But yesterday I suddenly got pain across my pubic bone to the top of my thighs making it painful when walking or moving around. When I went to bed my ankles were swollen too and hadn’t been before. Any advice from anyone else who has had similar?

Ahhh thank you and you. I’ll call the midwife shortly anyway but thought if someone has experienced it and has some tips that would be good. Hoping it’s actually just something I did yesterday and will disappear 😬 the hip and back pain I’ve been managing with anyway until now

The hip pain is brutal.. I’ve had a lame bum on and off for a while but the swollen ankle thing sounds a bit like high blood pressure (from what I’ve read) do you have a blood pressure monitor at home? I’m sure your midwife will have loads of knowledge.. good luck with that pain! Xx

Yeah it’s most annoying when it’s keeping me up at night. Well my ankles had gone down this morning and I did think that was a fairly normal sign. Left a message as no one picked up and it’s not urgent. I don’t have a monitor but I’m seeing her on Wednesday so she’ll check it then. It’s been all fine up to now.

Definitely mention the swelling to the midwife. Try using a pelvic /SPD belt during the day when walking etc. Try gentle exercises /pilates but don't push into pain. Take it easy if you are new to it as you might not feel pain until afterwards. I also find using a 'spikey ball' or fascia release ball good for the glutes.You could also try a warm bath before bed with epsom salts/magnesium.

Thanks. Midwife called back but said there’s not much that can be done except take it easy, and if it’s no better on wed they can refer me to physio. Hmm no exercise is possible with no pain. Some pain is manageable but with every movement of my lower body there is pain… so… not really sure what I am or am not supposed to do. Haven’t thought about Epsom salts that’s a good idea. Yeah getting in and out of the bath is tricky though - I feel I’ve undone all the good I did. Will look for a belt but I feel my issues are coupled with some sciatica I’m experiencing at the moment and one is exacerbating the other. I just hope the pelvic pain disappears as quickly as it came on as I feel like an invalid right now!

Have you got a gym ball? Great for some gentle pelvic movements on in sitting or kneeling and leaning onto ball helps to relieve back pain and gentle rocking back and forth. Try doing pelvic floor exercises in the meantime if you aren't already. You can take paracetamol too if needed but aware that doesn't often help. Hope it settles soon.

I have now got a gym ball we blew up last night. It does provide a bit of relief to sit on. But doesn't improve the pain when I stand up. Yep I’ve been doing pelvic floor exercises daily before this happened - it just suddenly came on badly. And yes the midwife suggested paracetamol is safe to take

Hopefully they can refer you to a women's health physio. Manual therapy can help but only specifically trained physios/osteopaths etc will do this during pregnancy. Might be worth looking into private clinics if NHS wait is long or they can only provide education and advice.

Midwife said if it hasn’t improved by wed when I see my actual midwife she can refer me to their physio- it can take a couple of weeks but that’s it which didn’t see too bad to me. In the meantime I’m going to be really aware of my posture and just try to move around and not get stuck in one place too much. I had a good sleep last night (my hips take the brunt of that pain but the front pelvis gets a rest) so it’s not as stiff this morning. Hoping that continues

I remember having this in my last pregnancy in my third trimester so I feel sorry for you it hurts!!!But I didn't get the swollen knee pain, and it went away as soon as I gave birth so nothing to offer here except for my words and feelings of empathy

Thanks Jana, that’s pretty much what the midwife said. It came on so fast out of nowhere I hoping it goes in the same way. I’d rather not have another 13 weeks of this 😬 but fully prepared that there’s actually not much I can do other than take everything easy
