Question, I was diagnosed with a fatty liver and I have two cysts in my liver that showed up with an ultrasound. My Dr. would like me to get an MRI but I am deathly claustrophobic and they cannot scan the liver other than in an enclosed MRI. Even when they give me Ativan or Xanax I freak out and they have to pull me out. Is the fibroscan similar to an MRI or is it more like a cat scan? The Dr. said because of my claustrophobia she will just ultrasound me again in 6 months but I am worried and feel maybe I should ask for a fibroscan. Does anyone else have cysts in their liver?

Fibroscan?
Hi Cindy
Sorry that you have that challenge. FibroScan is like an ultrasound so not enclosed but provides more information.
No cysts but I have a fibroscan once a year, they are are more like an ultrascan, no machine involve, lay on a bed!
A fibroscan is just like an ultrasound and a wood stud finder. The ultrasound wand moves between the ribs to measure the thickness and hardness of the liver between the ribs. (Just like finding studs in the wall.)
A Fibroscan sends a pulse through your liver which is used to measure liver stiffness and fat content. It does not create the sort of image your team likely wants to get a better view of the liver and cysts, etc. In short, one does not substitute for the other. Good luck to you.
Thank you for the responses. I think I will ask for a fibroscan.
