Does anyone know if developing gallstone pancreatitis elevate liver enzymes?

I’ve always had an history of elevated liver enzymes...what you call “slightly elevated” for years. This was in my 20’s. I stopped drinking and numbers returned to normal. Upon doing that, sadly, my diet was not good, and my numbers climbed up and stayed elevated until now. I’m 30 years old and have fatty liver. After having a baby last year and being overweight, I did develop gallstones and had a few gallstone attacks with the last attack sending me to the ER, where they discovered small stones and lipase level was very high, diagnosing gallstone pancreatitis. They checked liver function as well and it was very high too...highest I’ve ever seen it. I knew it would be elevated but just curious to see if gallstones and pancreatitis would cause it be even higher. Thanks

high levels are an indication that liver cells are being damaged so likely a part of the disease process but it does get complicated because the liver does so many things but it is result not a cause

Hi Leah - I can only speak for my experience but I just had the same issue as you. My liver enzymes were initially elevated when I was diagnosed with Nash stage 3 fibrosis in May 2018. After 2 months of changed diet My enzymes dropped to normal and remained there for the past year. But I ended up in hospital July 7th with a diagnosis of acute gallstone pancreatitis. Lipase elevated, liver enzymes elevated. Even my A1c increased. On July 8th I had surgery to remove the gallbladder. The surgeon said that he was certain that the pancreatitis inflammation would clear after the removal of the gallbladder - so the Lipase would return to normal - and he was sure the liver enzymes had also elevated because of the gallbladder. He was right. I had blood tests at my regular appointment at the Liver clinic on July 17th (9 days after the gallbladder removal) and my liver enzymes are back to normal, Lipase is normal and my A1c is also returned to normal.

Thank you for sharing your story. I’m relieved to know that was the case. Sorry to hear that you’ve went though something similar. They never re did my liver enzymes, only lipase level, which returned to normal. I will be having liver panel done again very soon. Take care!

That’s great that you’ll be having the liver enzymes tested again soon and hopeful that they are in normal range! Good luck

Leah, last year this time, I had elevated liver enzymes. After a couple of tests, ultrasound and CAT scan, found out that gall stones had migrated to by biliary duct. Had to have procedure to have them removed and month later had my gall bladder out.

Sorry to hear that. I know that must have been painful! Mine was also stuck in the biliary duct, causing pancreatitis. Worst pain ever! My doctors were going to remove the stone in the duct but after having an MRI, the stone was no longer seen. They said I had passed it. However, they discovered numerous amount of gallstones In gallbladder so they removed mine the next day. Hope you are doing well post cholecystectomy!!
