question about Fats

I've been getting some mixed information about fats. Mainly, fat comes from coconut oil. It is a saturated fat but I've been told it's a good fat. Except according to Anthony William in his book Liver Rescue you are to avoid radical fats which I believe that includes the fat from coconuts. I have a yogurt that's no added sugar, COCO June and it's made from coconut milk but it has 13 g of saturated fat in 4 ounces, I'm thinking I might have to give that up but I thought I'd put it out there for opinions of others.

He also avoids large amounts of fat at once and that includes olive oil in larger amounts like 4 ounces, he stated in his book that that's an overload for your liver.

Thank you

Hi Savannah

There is a lot of confusion about fats. Coconut is unusual because it is saturated but short and can pass directly into the blood stream and to the liver, however it is easy for the body to burn as fuel so a mixed bag. Long chain fats bypass the liver and may never be seen by the liver. Here is a link about how they work

Here is a link to a discussion of the diet we recommend which includes information about fats.

Hope these help.

It is like most things. There are tradeoffs. It is a saturated fat but is quite a bit less inflammatory than beef tallow for example. It is rapidly available as an energy source since it goes directly into the blood stream and it is a "clean burning" fat so it is a dose question. You naturally get a mixture of fats and your body needs different kinds. olive oil, as an example is about 15% saturated fat. In modest amounts as part of a mixed food system it is not a big concern but one should be aware of how it works.

I think if I had a normal liver some coconut oil won’t be as damaging, but I am a stage III on my fibro scan for a fatty liver, which you know is the last stage before fibrosis and Scarring, so I am trying to be as strict as I can until I get the fatty liver reduced, I got very detailed bloodwork from my gastrologist she has done an excellent job, and everything was normal except, no or little scaring, my ALT was 34, which she said she wasn’t concerned because everything else was perfect, I feel like I have a second chance here and I don’t want to blow it

I'd say you have it about right. It is a journey of a million little decisions made day after day. The liver wants to improve and will if we don't keep beating up on it.

I am still confused about the daily percentage of fats, proteins and carbs. Can you clarify, Wayne?

Figure about 20% each of protein and carbs the rest mostly unsaturated fat but being exact isn't important. Minimize sugars, salt, and refined grains and it usually works out.
