Hi all. I am a 47 year old married woman just beginning her fatty liver ordeal. About 5 or 6 years ago my doctor told me that I had fatty liver and that I didn't need to worry about it because it was no big deal and common. That it was symptomless and benign. I had an ultrasound done last year and it showed that I had moderate fatty liver. I moved out of state and a different doctor told me that I had Nash stage 0 after a bunch of blood work was done. I am increasing and symptoms and feel horrible and feel like I have absolutely no care. I watched my mother die a slow terrible death of liver cancer and it seems that people who gets cirrhosis from Nash suffer exactly the same way. I am currently trying to lose the 70 lb that I have put on over the last 10 years and trying to eat healthy to see if I can save my liver. Any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated because I don't know if it's too late for me yet. Thank you un advance and I have read all the stories and I was touched by the them all and I pray for you all.

Welcome to the forum. You have definitely come to the right place for great insight and understanding on working with a fatty liver. I am 48 and was also diagnosed with a fatty liver. I have not been diagnosed with NASH but definitely fatty liver by ultrasound, CT scan and confirmed with a Fibroscan. I will give you some insight to what I have gone through and learned so far. The biggest thing I have learned in my process is how different our disease can be to each individual in regards to symptoms as well as healing. The liver is remarkable and unique to each person without a doubt. With your diagnosis the biggest thing is going to be diet and weight loss since that is the underlying culprit of the disease. The liver seems to have great healing properties when the underlying cause of disease is removed whether that be Hepatitis, alcohol or fatty liver from diet. In regards to the diet that has worked for me is following a plant based veggie diet with some fruits (careful because of the sugar), no fried foods, low low low salt intake (be mindful of any and all frozen dinners), minimal sugar and limit the meats to very clean proteins. There have been many many success stories on arresting and reversing fatty liver with diet and exercise. This will be a life long commitment to change but is by no means your fate if you don’t let it be.

Thank you so much for your post. I am definitely eating a lot better and very close to what you are doing, except I added chicken breast and salmon. I eat a lot of nuts because I feel like I'm starving all the time. I know losing weight too fast is bad for you as well. Do you consume a lot of olive oil? I replied to this post already but it didn't populate so I hope I'm not repeating myself too much. ;)

I cook with olive oil and a little coconut oil too. I felt like was starving at first too. It does get better and that changes. That feeling will go away when your body adjusts to the new calorie changes and new foods. I am rarely hungry anymore. When I do get hungry and I know I don’t need to eat I’ll drink a full glass of water. I am 10 months into my diet and have lost 40 pounds. I have a follow up scan on the 5th of June so I am hoping for some good news. I feel different though..... a lot better....like my body has done some healing. Around the 7 month mark my energy levels went way up, headaches are gone along with muscle aching and my stool is normal again. Not to be too graphic but I was having soft oily stools for a long time. I’ve read that can be a sign of liver dysfunction also. All that is normal now.

Just remember this is a marathon and not a sprint. I had to remind myself a lot of that. That I didn’t put my liver in it’s fatty state overnight and it wasn’t going to heal overnight either. I would get so frustrated in the beginning because I am very inpatient and want results right away lol.

Wow, congratulations on the 40 lb loss! Please reply here when you find out after your skin and let me know how it goes. Your replies are very helpful. I too have had oily diarrhea for a long time now and they just told me I had IBS. I don't mind too much info because it's helpful lol. 10 months is a long time. I know I need to do this for life and it's going to be so hard, but I also know if I want to extend my life I must do this. When I got divorced 13 years ago I want on a strict starvation diet and I exercised and I lost 55. I also smoked back then too. (I quit almost 10 years ago) it probably wasn't healthy, but I felt like a million bucks. I want to do it healthy this time. Thanks for the tips!

Check to see if you have hemachromatosis. This is what I did. I feel much better. I Need to follow up. But liver enzymes have normalizedTake the stress off your liver by detoxifying. You can do this by 1. Changing your water I use the berkey filter. 2. Eat clean and organic as much as possible.3. Get a little -near infrared sauna to use you skin to excrete toxins. I would do every day if I could. 4. Do coffee enema (use purity or bullet proof for toxin free coffee) i do 2x week. 5. Use ionic foot bath to remove toxins and heavy metals. I do 2 x week. Most of these treatments can be reviewed on line. Many prominent docs are recommending these treatments. It just makes sense to me if your liver is compromised you should take work load off your liver.

Hey JFK1,

I’ll share my story. ALT was mildly elevated for two years and fibroscan indicated mild fibrosis.

This was in January when I weighed 112kg, I’m a 30 year old male who used to play lots of rugby.

Fast forward to now, I am 105kg, just had repeat bloods done and ALT is back in normal range and I am treating my liver well.

My routine:

- warm water with half lemon squeezed and 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar every morning.

- 40gram of oats with almond milk for breakkie

- mid morning snack of apple and walnuts

- lunch is Greek salad (high quality extra virgin oil) and tin of tuna

- mid afternoon banana

- evening meal of white fish or chicken with Brussels and asparagus (do not fry anything, grill or bake only in very little oil) dress your food after cooking

- yoghurt for dessert (low fat)

Exercise

Minimum 5 times a week

Upper body workout followed by lower body workout every other day.

Always finish with 20 mins on elliptical trainer. Try to do high intensity of 40 secs moderate pace followed by 20 secs of as hard as you can go...... try to really get sweating.

Thanks so much for sharing with me your routine! As I am reading this I'm enjoying my morning hot water with half a squeezed lemon in it :) I have been sauteing vegetables in a pan with olive oil is this bad? I've been starting my day with the hot water and lemon, followed by a smoothie made with mixed greens, blueberries, flax seed, chia seed, one scoop of whey protein powder and almond milk. I'll have a snack of an apple or orange. Lunch is a can of bean soup. Dinner is salmon or chicken with grilled or sauteed veggies. I know the soup has a lot of sodium in it but I'm not really putting salt on anything else and I used to eat gobs of it. My exercise is still in the light phase I'm working up to doing it a little harder. Week one is almost finished :)
