Pain medications

Hi everyone. This is going to sound like a strange question. First let me say, I have stage 4 Cirrhosis. I was diagnosed about 2.5 yrs. ago

Was told I had NASH. I have numerous other illnesses. I am taking Oxycodone as well as a host of other prescriptions. Does anyone know if I could test positive for illegal drugs because of the Oxycodone? My doctor said that I did test positive. I am 62 yrs. old and have never done an illegal drug in my life. So now he took me off my pain meds.

I would think its possible if your dose is high enough as it is an opiate drug. An opiate is an opiate be it oxycodone, codeine or street heroin they all metabolize into and strip back to the same thing as i understand it, morphine. That is what a drug test looks for, it doesnt distinguish between which opiates. Your doctor should know and understand this though? Its strange, maybe he thought your levels of it were higher than they should be? I definitely would speak to him about it again. Hope this helps a little.

Not all opiates turn into morphine and there are opiates and opiods. Opiates (Morphine, Codein). Opiods are synthetic opiates (Oxycodone, Hydromorphone, hydrocodone). Oxycodone doesn't break down into morphine, it breaks down into oxymorphone so it wouldn't trigger a postive for morphine. If you look at the cup you pee in (drug screening test), you will see oxycodone has its own special spot. So if the only pain meds you take is oxycodone the drug screen would pop postive for opiates/opiods and oxycodone. If there is no spot that says oxycodone then it will just pop postive for opiates/opiods. Heroine breaks down into morphine so if someone does heroine the test will pop postive for morphine. If on your drug screen test they don't have the different opiates/opiods listed and there is only a spot for opiates/opiods then it needs to go the lab for GC/MS testing to see which opiate/opiod was consumed.

I don't know all your meds or the test your PM Dr uses but if he/she went solely by the results on the screening test (the cup you pee in), I would ask him/her to test me again and send it off to the lab for confirmatory GC/MS testing.

Hope it all works out....

They should ask you what your medications are when you do the drug screen. You will have proof of your pain meds from the pharmacy that your doctor prescribed them so you should be covered I would think.
