Is this level of pain normal for 'just' constipation

Hi everyone

As a group of parents with constipation experience, I would love to get your thoughts on the level and type of pain your children have experienced due to constipation.

We have been through a long journey of investigation of my daughter's abdominal pain, and although found to have 'hidden' constipation ie she was going every day and her tummy was soft, but she was 'full of poo' on an x-ray, we are now really trying to manage it, but it's hard to tell when she is constipation she has sometimes gone backwards. We are now on a good regime. however, she is still in pain often every day.

All other tests including colonospathy have come back normal.

My question is what type of pain are older children (she is 9) in day-to-day with chronic constipation? She feels lots of pain and discomfort playing sports especially, moving her bowels (before and after) at night. Is this similar or once the constipation is managed does the pain tend to go away as it's not for her I still wonder if something else is going on really.

Hi,

My little girl has been backed up and the only thing that worked was disimpaction, till we reached rusty water, then we very gradually reduced sachets. Now we’re on 2 sachets and 5 of sodium picosuflate and I know we’ve finally made progress.

Have they tested for allergies and celiacs disease?

Yes she has had pretty much every test as when the pain initially started she also had very high calprotectin levels. They thought that a virus had triggered IBS worsening her constipation and tummy pain.

Hi. Im sorry your daughter is going through this. My son is 9. He has a nice soft poo every day, good size ( we manage with psyllum husk and occasional senna or lactulose). But he still has daily soiling accidents and he gets periodic stomach pain. Hes just had a week of stronger pain, before that 10 days without pain.....this pattern has been most of this year... Im currently upping doses to try to eliminate any poo stuck. Like your daughter his stomach is soft and flat..... its so strange....

Could it be the start of puberty. My sdaughter is 8 1/2 and has started puberty back on epilepsy meds which can cause constipation and she has chia seeds and natural fibre filled food, with fluids all day when with me and her dad. More pain when she's at her mum's.
