recurrent UTIs in child

my 9 year old daughter has been plagued with UTIs. She’s had them on and off for a few years now but since January it’s been constant. No more that 7 days between antibiotics. She’s now on a prophylactic dose of trimethoprim and STILL they come back with in a week. It’s taking its toll on the whole family now. Has anyone had this? What was the outcome? We have been for a scan and only heard from Gp that said it looks fine so waiting on peads. They want a nuclear scan of the kidneys but I think this involves an injection in to a vein and this isn’t going to be easy at all. My daughter is traumatised after a hospital stay. I don’t know what else to do. She has suffered from constipation for years but it’s under control now after a clear out etc. her bowel was enlarged so this might affect the bladder. If anyone’s been though anything similar I’d really appreciate to learn what happened for you.

thanks for reading.

Hi there. Our daughter is fourteen now and went through all this for years. She still has to take cosmocol daily and several times a week does peristeen, a colonic irrigation system. However the UTI's stopped at about your daughetrs age when we used antibacterial oilatum in the bath and live friendly bacteria with acidopholus ,one a day. This may not work for your daughter but possibly worth a try. The antibiotics didn't work for our daughter'she's even allergic to trimethroprim. Good luck,so feel for you all.

Thanks so much for your reply. I will definitely try this. Can I ask where you got these things? My daughter is also allergic to penicillin so lots we can’t have and she reacted badly to nitrofurantion too. It just seems all so out of control. We can’t plan anything because the likelihood is that she will end up unwell.

So the oilatum ,and there is a shower gel, we get on prescription. The tablets i get from holland and barett. There is a childrens one i believe.I expect you know not to use bath bombs or anything like that.

That’s great thanks. Did they give this because of UTIs? We have been using QV gentle wash that I get from the pharmacy but I’m whiling to try anything at this point.

HI. Yes they did. I think its because they felt the soiling was causing the UTI's.The anti biotics didnt work very well. Personally she still has soiling but i think that the tablets make her pooh less toxic. That's my very unscientific view.

Thanks so much I will definitely ask about this. She doesn’t so much soil anymore but there are some times small marks and she is a bed wetter and I’m sure this doesn’t help 😵‍💫. We are going to try the alarm again and we tried the tablets but they made her feel terrible.

Hi, I just wanted to nip back and thank you for your advice. We have been using a probiotic wash and taking probiotics gummies since this chat and so far ( touch wood) we have been UTI free!!
